From forever alt-hip Broughton Street with its buzzy bars packing in the pre-club party crowd, the pub (and wine bar) options continue down the hill with an increasing choice of mellow locals perfect for brunch, a pint and the papers in on-the-up Canonmills and Broughton.

The Basement Bar & Restaurant 10–12A Broughton Street, EH1 3RH It's been around for a generation (at least), which definitely means the Basement qualifies as an icon in Edinburgh's fast-moving bar scene.

One of the most impressively all-purpose pubs in Edinburgh, serving brunch, lunch, dinner, wine, cocktails and rotating craft beer casks.

Taken over in early 2016 by the owners of Redmond’s of Dennistoun in Glasgow, this bright but slightly out-of-the-way local bar has evolved into one of the most impressively all-purpose pubs in Edinburgh.

Brunch is served at weekends from 10am to 4.30pm and takes in everything from Balearic poached eggs with sobrassada to salt beef hash with potato, poached egg and sriracha sauce.

To lunch – short rib burger and fries; a light miso broth with mushroom, pak choi and poached egg; or fluffy bao buns with a range of fillings, including Puddledub pork belly or seasoned halloumi cheese.

Excellent teas, coffees, wines, cocktails and rotating beer casks mean this is a bar worth making your local, wherever you live.

This place is a good case in point.

They were pleasantly light, squishy and savoury inside – though we couldn’t taste any cheese at all – and came with a smudge of smoky harissa mayo and a salad of avocado slivers, tomato cubes, cress, beetroot and grated carrot.

Same goes for our Bigger Plate of short rib burger (£12.50), which was a hefty and fat two-inch thick patty, done to medium, with a good beefy charred flavour, packed into a sesame bun (nice, since I’m a bit bored of brioche).

It came with some Elastoplast-sized strips of well-fired streaky bacon, tomato, a good caramelised onion paste and an enamel cup of decent skinny fries on the side.

There’s a choice of three slightly uninspiringly ubiquitous puddings, but we did like the salted caramel brownie (£6) – a good example of its kind, with that pleasant texture of wet compacted earth, a dollop of vanilla ice-cream on the top and some raspberry coulis puddled around.

Travel: Edinburgh Food Safari Superbreak | Foodie Explorers

We recently embarked on our first Super Break trip which included a food safari walking food tour during a two-night stay in Edinburgh with a choice of hotels.

A food safari is a walking food tour led by Nell Nelson, the Edinburgh-born food writer, cookbook author and TV presenter whom you may have seen on The woman who ate Scotland.

Each tour starts at 1pm and lasts for 3 hours covering at least 6 eating and drinking stops but if the thought of walking doesn’t appeal to you then don’t fret as there is more eating than walking as this tour is limited to Broughton Street, and just off it, in Edinburgh’s Georgian New Town (the tour may change depending on time, business opening hours etc.).

Keep walking down Broughton Street until it becomes Rodney Street and you’ll find our third stop, an independently-owned bar and restaurant in the Canonmills area for a selection of Scottish cheeses with quince paste.

Food Safari tours run Wednesday – Saturday and the meeting point will be either The Bearded Baker, 46 Rodney St, Edinburgh or the Barony Bar, 81-85 Broughton St, Edinburgh.
