The first Osteria (means Tavern or Inn) del tempo perso opened in Rome in Ardeatina street in 1861.

Many poems and songs were dedicated to this name as it became a piece of Italian history.

Today this ancient name belongs to the Iacobelli family.

Mother Sabrina and her sons Marco and Matteo in the year 2003 brought back this ancient way of naming taverns and rediscovered manners and recipes of ancient times.

Patron Matteo Iacobelli has another restaurant with the same name located in Lazio, and he is clearly passionate about bringing an authentic Italian experience to Edinburgh.

The restaurant stocks an impressive array of fine wines, and diners are treated to a complimentary glass on arrival.

You will not find any pizza here, but the menu does feature some great Italian classics and the homemade pasta is quite delicious.

Impressively fronted Bruntsfield Italian, where you can pick up pasta and a vintage bicycle at the same time.

The 2018 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £7.95 (+ ).

With this prominent corner spot in Bruntsfield and a sister restaurant just outside Rome in Casalvieri, restaurateur Marco Iacobelli has plans in the pipeline for a rebrand of Osteria Del Tempo Perso, aiming to introduce a more traditional Italian style of eating with his young team of chefs.

The décor is somewhat hectic, with every available corner stashed with jars, packets, bottles and a couple of vintage bikes thrown in too.

Popular with the local community, the team here are keen to accommodate families and also offer weekend brunch with live jazz music.
