Italian Appitite

Papilio, 158 Bruntsfield Place, Edinburgh — Scottish Food Review

After consuming most of my drink whilst deliberating between choices we settled on a Pizza Campagnola and a Pizza Rucola.

Within seconds of placing down our menus a waiter appeared as if by magic at our table to take our order and once completed woosh he was gone... What seemed like moments later two dinner plate sized pizzas arrived at our tables, the bases were thin and crispy, the toppings were applied with a benevolent hand and if you could taste with your eyes it was delicious.

The Pizza Rucola has the same tomato and mozzarella as the Campagnola, but then lashings of Parma Ham are laid out, basking under lashings of shaved Parmesan.

Despite being unable to eat any more pizza, that special bit of stomach reserved only for puddings meant that my dining buddy was able to order the Tartufo Ice cream.

Two pizzas, ice cream and a couple of soft drinks came in just over £30.

If Pasta, Pizza and plenty of other delicious dishes are the order of the day, then these top Italian restaurants are the places to go.

Run by well known and hugely popular chef Rosario Sartore, who brings his family’s cooking all the way from Naples to this homely little restaurant on Dalry Road.

With huge portions and a straight forward and honest approach to Neapolitan dishes, you’ll find it is one of the best restaurants in town, never mind just for Italian cuisine.

The menu is huge and covers all corners of the Italian culinary map, with their pastas and pizzas considered to be some of the best in the city.

Frizzante has actually won an award for gluten-free catering and was a finalist last year in the Scottish Italian Awards for “Best family restaurant.”

There is a bit of a sense of going back in time when you go through the doors of Bruntsfield’s well- established Italian restaurant, Papilio.

The 3 course lunch for £7.95 was well advertised on the sandwich board just outside as J. and I approached.

The soup of the day was chicken and vegetable and on such a cold day as it was on our visit, was an excellent choice for J.,   my lunch companion.

I chose Antipasti Vegetariano that came as sun dried tomato, olives, rocket, perfectly roasted aubergine and red pepper.

From a good and varied menu, J. chose as a main course the salmon in a cream and white wine sauce which although just slightly over cooked for her taste, was a delicious and substantial meal.

Review – Papilio, Bruntsfield | The Edinburgh Reporter

One of the reasons Papilio opened in bustling Bruntsfield more than 20 years ago because it is has a village in a city feel.

It has a wonderful mix of students, professionals and permanent residents and we’ve enjoyed this atmospheric Italian restaurant several times in recent years.

Papilio, by the way, is an ancient word from Latin, meaning butterfly, and the menu seeks to provide an eclectic mix to suit all tastes.

Starters were interesting, and the veal and potato was tempting but the waiter eloquently described their home-made meatballs in tomato sauce with garlic bread I was sold.

Our mains included scaloppina funghi e crema (veal cooked in wine with mushrooms and crème), scaloppina alle romana (veal with sage, white wine and parma ham) and bistecca pizziola (a juicy sirloin with a wonderful white wine, herb, garlic and a tomato sauce) and pollo papilio (breast of chicken stuffed with spinach and cheese in breadcrums with garlic lemon and white wine sauce).
