The Apartment Restaurant, Reviews & Book - Hidden Edinburgh

Edinburgh’s theatregoers have regularly found themselves dining at The Apartment prior to seeing a production at the King’s Theatre just down the road.

The stylish bistro has been popular with Bruntsfield residents and visitors since its inception in 1999.

With large servings of flavoursome bistro cuisine at reasonable prices it is no wonder The Apartment has remained a favourite for the best part of two decades.

Restaurant review: The Voyage of Buck | The Student

Situated on the cobbled William’s Street, ‘The Voyage of Buck’ is a newly opened bar and restaurant from The Big Red Tea-pot company, who also run The Blackbird, Treacle and Hamilton’s.

‘The Voyage of Buck’ manages to amalgamate both the seductive speakeasy style of the prohibition, luring you in with their wall of endless glistening bottles, with the cosy and familiar atmosphere of a gastro-pub, allowing you to keep the company of man’s, four – legged best friend with you whilst you enjoy your meal.

Fascinated by both his travels and the literature of the 20th century, the restaurant team have successfully created a bar influenced by his globe-trotting; categorising the cocktail menu by the cities in which he was most struck by: Paris, Taipei, Havana and Cairo.

Between my date and I, we managed to polish off a cocktail each to wet our appetites (mine inspired by Taipei, my dates, Paris), three courses each, and one of the restaurants signature sharing cocktail bowls, ideal to share between a large group, or just two on a girly night out!

To be completely honest this restaurant is probably a bit out of the normal student budget for a casual meal out (Cocktails averaging at a price of £8), however if you are wanting to impress a special someone or really treat your latest tinder date this would be the ideal place to go to.

Dependable bistro with a solid range of set menu and lunch options and an interesting wine list.

Under new ownership, Karen and Ruori Stewart have retained some of the popular elements from the old menu such as the ‘chunky healthy skewers’, and introduced briefer à la carte and all-day set menus.

Regular headliners like steak and fries sit alongside meat and fish specials.

The drinks list is thoughtful and includes regular wine specials which trial potential newbies alongside the well-established herd.

Friendly staff, proximity to the King’s Theatre and a good value pre-theatre menu all ensure The Apartment’s continued reputation as a bit of a player.

We got together at The Cafe Royal, 19 West Register Street, Edinburgh, Scotland.

It was years since I had been to The Cafe Royal and I had forgotten what a popular, busy pub it is.

When we arrived about 3pm the bar was quite empty: by the time we left to find a different watering hole some five hours later, The Cafe Royal was back to being the bustling bar I remembered from years ago.

The company, the food and the drinks were all excellent, so whether you are looking for a pub to watch a rugby match or a restaurant to enjoy a meal with friends, I highly recommend Edinburgh’s Cafe Royal.

Modern bistro located close to the King’s Theatre.

The lunch menu offers some good value dishes This popular neighbourhood bistro has long enjoyed a faithful following.

Once the sister restaurant of The Outsider on George IV Bridge, new owners have taken over in the last few years, but the feel – and taste – of the place remains similar to what went before it.

The menu has a bistro feel, with the fish, chicken and lamb skewers perennially popular.

Culture lovers have a fondness for the place, given its close proximity to the King’s Theatre, so it pays to book ahead when there’s a big show on.
