Located within cat-slinging distance of the canal, the Golden Rule is what most cliched reviews would describe as ‘one of Edinburgh’s best-kept secrets’.

They’d be talking complete rubbish however, as the Rule is nothing of the sort – this is a public bar, and the public come here in their droves on a weekend to watch the rugby, football and anything else that can be viewed from a barstool whilst absorbing more units of alcohol than ought to be humanly possible.

While the formalities take place within the Golden Rule’s main bar, it is downstairs where most of the fun happens.

The golden rule of the Golden Rule, incidentally, is that you don’t make phone calls in the Golden Rule.

Upon asking my drinking partner, a beer aficionado and brewery bigwig, for her thoughts on the Golden Rule, she replied, ‘There’s a nice barman who works here and they’ve a good selection of cask ales.

With a good selection of guest and in house ales, whiskies and wines the Golden Rule is a popular place with locals and ale appreciators from all over the city.

The Golden Rule is a very pleasant, friendly bar worth a visit at any time during the day or evening.

My mate was living in Fowlers Ter, i came thru from Dundee to visit him, he took me to his local where we got rat assed on Orkney Skull Crusher, place was friendly and atmospheric, would love to come back and pay another visit.

Along with the bar staff, it makes the Rule the best anytime pub that I've ever been to.

I'm lucky enough to live just 2 doors down from the Golden Rule and must say it is a very pleasant pub.

Plant trees, shrubs and fruit trees now so that their roots will be ready to grow when the ground begins to warm up, and provide them with a slow release fertiliser.

Although hardy through most of the winter, top fruit and soft fruit blossoms will need protecting from late frost.

Now that they have finished flowering, shrubs such as Camellia and Forsythia can be lifted and moved provided the soil is not frozen or waterlogged.

Winter flowering heathers can also be cut back to a compact shape – however, if your heather is looking woody and leggy, replacing it would be a better option as they will struggle to look their best again (they generally have a lifespan of about 10 years).

To generate more heat, there are things we can do such as using a propagator or seed tray inside on a windowsill or greenhouse.

Away from the regular tourist trails nestles the Golden Rule, a traditional oak paneled pub with a loyal local following.

They have a legendary quiz night which is challenging but very good fun, and host regular live music events.
