Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh - The John Hope Gateway

The John Hope Gateway, RBGE's new biodiversity and information centre, is a shining example of green construction and sustainability, and sits on the footprint of the former Botanics Shop.

The John Hope Gateway commemorates RBGE's Regius Keeper from 1761-1786, Professor John Hope, a leading botanist and teacher of his time who was also responsible for unifying the Gardens at one site on Leith Walk (more information on the History page).

The John Hope Gateway offers visitors an unrivalled facility where they can discover the world of plants and the scientific work of RBGE through a unique set of interactive experiences and activities.

With the involvement of partners in science and conservation, The Gateway also provides a unique window on biodiversity in Scotland.

The building also houses other top-class facilities including a Shop, education room, a Real Life Science Studio, permanent and temporary exhibitions, interactive media, plant sales and Gateway Restaurant.

The Gateway Restaurant makes the most of its location at the Royal Botanic Gardens in terms of its outlook as well as its use of home-grown produce, as dishes are enlivened by freshly picked salads, herbs and vegetables from the grounds and polytunnels.

Open from breakfast through lunch and afternoon tea, the menu is full of classics like bangers and mash, deli sandwiches and sticky toffee and banana pudding.

The restaurant’s modern interior in the John Hope Gateway Centre also creates a bright, open and energising spot to eat, with glass fronts and interesting architectural features.

With commanding views over the beautiful gardens beyond, The Gateway Restaurant is located within the heart of the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh's iconic and unique new John Hope Gateway building.

The Gateway Restaurant is the perfect location for breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea, as well as the ideal space for corporate, business and private evening events of all sizes.

John Hope Gateway | Edinburgh Guide

The John Hope Gateway, at the West Gate of the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh, is a modern visitor centre, shop, multimeda gallery, museum, and garden, all rolled into one.

The chalet-styled building, which was purpose-built on the old Royal Botanic Garden shop and opened in October 2009, is also an  example of green construction techniques.

"The central message of the Gateway is that plants are fundamental in creating a world that can support all life on this planet, including ourselves," says Botanics Regius Keeper, Professor Blackmore.

As well as making an impressive entrance, the centre houses a gift shop, education rooms, a real life science studio, permanent and temporary exhibitions, interactive media, plant sales and Gateway restaurant.

The new building is named after John Hope who was RBGE's Regius Keeper from 1761 to 1786.
