Autumnal Feasts at OSTARA Cafe — Buck and Birch

Review analysis
food   menu

With and unbridled passion and expertise we showcase the very best of what is available from our natural Wild Larder, transforming many humble and unusal ingredients into a truly delicious experience.

Join us and likeminded diners around our communal table for a unique culinary journey along our wild coastlines and through our hedgerows, fields and forests.

Diners will enjoy a multi course taster menu designed as always to perfectly reflect the season and locality.

To compliment the menu the OSTARA Cafe are also offering a unique wine flight designed to compliment the dishes and ingredients.

We would like to ask all diners to come with an open mind and an expectation to try lots of new, unusual (and delicious) ingredients.

Ostara Cafe - Cafes in Edinburgh - The Skinny

Now a stalwart amongst North Edinburgh's coffee-lovin' scene, Ostara Cafe is a wee gem is tucked away on a quiet cobbled street just off the Shore in Leith; perfect if you need an excuse to escape the bustle of the city centre.

While the coffees and cakes are tempting, it's the brunch options (served all day) which will keep you coming back time and again, with delicious bagels provided by The Bearded Baker, breakfast rolls and french toast offerings galore.

While there are plenty of hangover-busting options, there's also a big emphasis on using fresh, locally-sourced ingredients, and there are plenty of healthy alternatives should you feel the need to top up on your vitamin levels.

Locals might also notice a few familiar names on the menu, as Ostara do their best to source their products from Edinburgh-based suppliers; with offerings from companies such as Pekoe Tea, Williams & Johnson Coffee Co and the wonderful folks at Puddledub farm, customers can rest assured that they are doing their bit to help support local businesses and help keep the indepedent cafe scene sustainable.

It's not just Leithers that have fallen for Ostara's charm; our readers too have been showing the feels for this wee cafe for quite some time, and have voted it one of the country's Best Cafes, for the second year running, as well as in Best Breakfasts in our 2018 Food and Drink Survey.

Friendly new Leith café-bistro with an engaged attitude to its local neighbourhood, suppliers and good, fresh food.

Mismatched furniture and colourful artwork create a quirky and fun ambience, reflecting the friendly service and inventive food here.

Roast sweet potato with hot smoked salmon (from Welch’s Fishmonger) comes with a colourful salad of alfalfa sprouts, yellow and pink beetroot, pickled cucumber and leaves.

Inventive specials, such as venison haggis and potato cake topped with fried-egg, offer something new on every visit.

Overall, a neighbourhood treasure worth discovering in Leith.

Who makes TRJFP? #1: Ostara Cafe – The Real Junk Food Project ...

Review analysis

It seemed fitting to chat with David, who runs the cafe with his partner Carey, for the first of a series of features on the people that make TRJFP Edinburgh happen.

You can buy a 2kg bag of chicken wings from Farmfoods for £2 – I’d never shop at Farmfoods but if I only had £2 and needed to get the most calories for my family… I’d get the 2kg bag of chicken wings from Farmfoods.

There’ll be people in these communities – could be a few, could be one guy – who will want to help, who will want to do something.

A lot of communities around where I grew up people would leave their doors open.

Finally, one more impossible definition: TRJFP wants to encourage people to value food as a resource differently – how do you value food as a resource?

Review: BABA Grill and Cocktail Bar, Edinburgh - SaltyCritic

Review analysis
food   menu   ambience   staff

After the first evidences of usage in the 15th century, Levant and Orient undertook an evolution of meaning in the 18th and 19th centuries where they directly referred to all places east of the Mediterranean.

Phasing out another waitress laying down the ‘concept’ (no real structure, food comes when done, etc. etc.), I glanced over BABA’s menu which immediately struck me with the post traumatic dread of vegan restaurant ingredient lists.

The waitress who looked perceptibly restless, was worried that two ‘try them all’s, a couple of cauliflower fritters and singular haggis kibbeh would not be enough for four of us.

But if I ever am to return to BABA it would have to be specifically for the haggis and harissa kibbeh.

Despite my first impressions of BABA, it would be unjust of me to colour my final assessment of the place based on my understanding of their interior design that could very well be innocent and with good intentions.

Grams – Edinburgh's First Naked Cafe

Review analysis
food   drinks   desserts

Grams is a new cafe in Haymarket where you’ll be able to buy clean, healthy non-processed fast food and cakes as well as artisan coffee.

You might’ve already spotted the exquisite Grams cakes at Stockbridge Market in the past few months because, well, they’re too pretty to miss!

Raw cakes is where it all started, but now Grams will be expanding into healthy, natural fast food and smoothies too.

You can get them at Grounds Cafe (Stockbridge), Hula Juice Bar (Victoria Street), Ostara (Leith), Cairngorm (Melville Street) and Real Foods (Broughton Street).

For coffee probably Cairngorm (Melville Street) or Artisan Roast (Stockbridge) but for food and drink….
