It’s the first place on this street to serve oysters for quite a while, I’d guess.

They’re serving a good blend from Stockbridge roastery Mr Eion.

My eye was caught by their vegetarian breakfast not least because I was intrigued by mention of a falafel sausage.

The plate was soon with me looking good but with room for some improvement.

So overall, Aurora looks to be beginning life from a very good foundation.

I decided on a veggie pizza, Robin had a lasagne and Racheal opted for a salmon pasta.

I decided on a veggie pizza, Robin had a lasagne and Racheal opted for a salmon pasta.

As we were leaving, there were a few teething problems, most notably the fact that Robin's lasagne hadn't been loaded onto his card, but problems are to be expected for somewhere that's newly opened, and we've all got experience working in customer service and retail so we were all fine with it.

Soon it was time for desserts, I had the 'death by chocolate' which I vacuumed up.As we were leaving, there were a few teething problems, most notably the fact that Robin's lasagne hadn't been loaded onto his card, but problems are to be expected for somewhere that's newly opened, and we've all got experience working in customer service and retail so we were all fine with it.

We were each given a free dessert card which, unfortunately for me, lasted for the length of time I'll be in France, so I gave it to my friends so that one of them can give it to their partner. All in all, it was a really nice evening.

A local café/bistro serving highly satisfying breakfasts, lunches and weekend dinners making a virtue of seasonal, local produce and creative culinary design.

Leith Walk is jammed with a variety of nice places to eat, so someone had to be the first to take the plunge and move a little further along.

Owner Kamil Witek – former head chef at Salt Café in Morningside – focuses on seasonal, local ingredients combined to create surprising flavour combinations.

The menu changes every couple of weeks, but lunch selections like pork cheek and barley ravioli bathed in a chicken consommé, or peppercorn crusted tuna with avocado nori show his ambition.

Eggs feature heavily on the breakfast list, including an eggs benedict dressed with truffle hollandaise and North African shakshuka baked eggs, while all the pastries and bread are made on the premises.

Apparently the chef has come from Salt Cafe in Morningside and, as much as I love that place, the menu never quite draws me in.

The best of these was probably the lamb kefta (£9), which featured a lovely spiced pita bread topped with two large hunks of cumin-spiced and dense meat, then a layer of Greek yogurt, onion and finely chopped gherkin sauce and, on the side, a pot of harissa injected coleslaw.

The pork cheek and barley ravioli (£11) was also lovely, with three sturdy parcels of pale minced meat dunked into a golden chicken consommé speckled with carrot and celery mirepoix.

Served in a pool of butter, this clutch of five skin-on pebbles were smoked and scattered with dill, with a pot of fresh and sour kefir on the side for dipping.

Their other pudding choice – an icing sugar dusted chocolate fondant (£2.75) – didn’t have the desired runny centre, but I can be philosophical about that, since you can’t (metaphorically) expect to see the aurora borealis AND get an egg on top.
