Cafe Grande | Welcome to Lunchquest

Review analysis
food   ambience

Cafe Grande is one of those places I’ve walked past so many times but never timed it right for a visit.

A smart bistro set-up, the place had a welcoming feel backed up by effusively friendly staff.

I opted for the fish sandwich and added a cup of soup on the side, which today was sweet potato and butternut squash.

So overall, Cafe Grande proved a smart place for a light lunch.

Scores Blythe scores Cafe Grande 4/5 for food 3.5/5 for presentation 4/5 for service 3.5/5 for setting giving an overall 15/20

La Cerise (199 Great Junction Street, Edinburgh) | The List

La Cerise is a family affair, where husband-and-wife team Martin and Claire Wilson prepare practically everything on offer themselves, from the soups, sandwiches and warm savouries, to the ice-creams, sorbets and cakes.

Hearty soups, such as potato and leek, are nourishing and tasty with nice pieces of both veg filling the bowl.

Homemade chilli con carne, or one of many salads, top fluffy baked potatoes, while made-to-order sandwiches provide a lighter option.

But it is probably the range of homemade cakes, ice-creams and sorbets that lure most inside.

Or wrestle with the rainbow of options in the ice-cream counter, with mango, strawberry, pistachio, chocolate and more to enjoy.

Alplings (16 Henderson Street, Edinburgh) | The List

Review analysis
food

After supplying their Austrian dumplings around the capital's street food markets, the Alplings team have now opened their own restaurant in Leith's Henderson Street.

The food of the mountains is now available at sea level, just off The Shore in Leith.

After popping up in festivals and markets Alplings now have a permanent home: a small, bright mountain hut of a restaurant with pine furniture, decorative hanging frying pans and soft furnishings in a wholesome shade of pale pasture-green.

The cooking reflects owner Martin Auer’s South Tyrol roots – so as well as the signature vegetarian alplings which come in delicious beetroot, cheese or spinach varieties, there are spätzle (Austrian egg noodle) dishes with carbonara and four cheese sauces; vegan ‘kuku’ tart; pepper goulash with polenta; sweet vanilla pancakes; and soft pretzl rolls.

The fresh, crunchy sauerkraut puts wishy-washy supermarket versions to shame too.

Sasso (100 Lindsay Road, Edinburgh) | The List

food

Shows all the signs of becoming a favourite local for all ages.

Named for Abruzzo’s famous Gran Sasso mountains, this pleasant spot does feel slightly like a mountain chalet, with a lengthy bar area blending into a main dining room accented with a mountainous mural and an inglenook fireplace.

Despite only opening in March 2016 there is already a feeling of a soon-to-be-favourite local around the place, while the menu also brings a smile.

Crispy pizza abounds, or try a more substantial main such as the venison loin with vanilla celeriac.

Friendly Leith café/bistro with an engaged attitude to its local neighbourhood, suppliers and good, fresh food.

Mismatched furniture and colourful artwork create a quirky and fun ambience, reflecting the friendly service and inventive food here.

Roast sweet potato with hot smoked salmon (from Welch’s Fishmonger) comes with a colourful salad of alfalfa sprouts, yellow and pink beetroot, pickled cucumber and leaves.

Inventive specials, such as venison haggis and potato cake topped with fried-egg, offer something new on every visit.

Homemade sweet treats, like apple and blueberry crumble, complement coffee from Williams & Johnson or Pekoe loose leaf tea.

It specialises in yakitori, grilled skewers, and ramen noodle bowls, with perhaps its best bargains to be had in the afternoon, when you can grab a bento box of three skewers, rice, salad and a side (£5 takeaway, eat-in £6.90) with miso soup and dessert.

Union of Genius supplies a number of local outlets with soups and salads, including nearby third-wave coffee shop, Brew Lab (6-8 South College Street, brewlabcoffee.co.uk).

Daily, it also produces grand bacon and cheese croissants, soups, salads and posh sandwiches (porchetta, smoked mackerel, mozzarella in spelt and honey), all, naturally, served on Manna's own rustic breads.

From dense, chewy Scots morning rolls, filled with good things at breakfast, through a lunch menu of cheese, smoked fish and deli platters, upmarket sandwiches and salads, the Larder delivers – and just a stone's throw from the Royal Mile, too.

The menu travels far and wide, from breakfasts of Mexican eggs, US pancakes and a fry-up that includes venison lorne – an unusual take on the Scottish square sausage – through to north African flatbread meals and a ramen soup.
