The menu is very focussed, with some simple starter options, comprising bread, bruschetta or antipasto platters, then pizza, pasta or salad to follow.

She wasn’t in the mood for pizza, so fancied a simple pasta dish, but there wasn’t one that offered a tomato-based sauce, but was light on cheese.

We decided that a shared antipasto platter was the best way to open, the gentlemen opted for pizza, while MJ negotiated her way to pasta treats, in her usual gorgeous style.

So overall, Origano is an outstanding little place, serving the best pizza that we’ve found in the city, so far.

Frizzante is the most recent venture of the charismatic and accomplished Don Pasquale and his son jonathan.

Don Pasquale has been serving delicious Italian food to Edinburgh patrons for many years, and his son has clearly inherited his enthusiasm and charm.

Frizzante specialises in Neapolitan and Mediterranean food.

As well as many of the classic pizza, pasta and risotto dishes patrons can also dine on rather good vegetarian and gluten free dishes.

They have a crowd pleasing party menu and an excellent pre-theatre menu and as well as stocking a good range of wines and beers they have an interesting menu of Mediterranean cocktails.

Origano (236 Leith Walk, Edinburgh) | The List

food

Popular Leith Walk Italian decked out with rustic-chic furnishings, where they really know their pizza.

From humble beginnings in the tiny original premises nearby (now its takeaway), Origano has made a name for itself serving up some of the better pizza to be had in the city.

There’s a good variety of pizzas from simple classics through to more elaborate creations, all in three sizes, ranging from reasonably petite to eye-poppingly large.

Starters and salads play their supporting roles well – a vegetable antipasti board includes, among other good things, warm and crumbly homemade focaccia and freshly roasted vegetables.

Finish up with a sweet and creamy tiramisu, easily big enough for two, before rolling out most satisfied onto Leith Walk.

Takeaway and delivery operation for Origano.

The main sit-in restaurant is a short distance away further down Leith Walk and across the road.

The 2017/18 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+ ).

With the pizzeria moving to larger premises just down the road in 2015, the original Origano unit on Leith Walk has now become the dedicated hub for their takeaway operation, Origano Go.

Like its bigger brother, it's the freshly made dough, considered topping combinations and authentic, quality ingredients (a mix of fresh local produce and imported Italian specialities) that make for great eating: they're staking a strong claim for the title of best pizza delivery in the capital.

The portions are generous, the prices are reasonable, and carnivores or vegetarians will not be disappointed at the extensive choice.

Small, popular Italian renowned for its pizzas offering stellar value for money Hidden behind spray-painted shutters (decorated with a slightly baffling mural of a flapping dove and a smoking man in a hat) during the day, from 5pm (and 12.30pm on Saturdays and Sundays) Origano serves up excellent, well-priced antipasto, pasta and pizza.

The pizza dough and bread is made in-house and is probably the main pull here; pizzas are nicely thin, topped with gorgeous cuts of prosciutto, spicy sausage or salty olives, and available in three sizes (starting from £6.95).

Leith’s Great Grog keep the wine list interesting too, with a fruity prosecco for £19.95 or Italian white and red wine from £12.50 a bottle.
