There’s a real mix of the classic Cantonese dishes and the more unusual: we recommend ordering the char sui pork with its sweet, honey-roasted flavour, and the crispy shredded chicken with a sweet and fiery honey and chilli sauce.

Corstorphine’s Cool Jade is open seven days a week for takeaway Chinese food - and whenever we’ve collected our meals in the past, each dish has been freshly cooked and steaming hot.

Sitting between Gorgie and Merchiston, Taste Good is a contemporary Chinese restaurant that also offers a takeaway and delivery service seven days a week.

On the menu, you’ll find all of the popular Cantonese dishes from sesame prawn toasts to special chow mein - if ordering starters, their aromatic crispy duck with pancakes and fresh plum sauce is exceptional.

The duck with lemon sauce is so good that we won’t go back to lemon chicken again - and if you get the chance to dine in, you’ll find that it’s one of the few Chinese restaurants in Edinburgh with a special children’s menu.

Until late 2011, Massimos (the familys restaurant in Glasgow is still superb) was the order of the day on Leith Walk, and Ernesto and Lisa Crolla offered chic Italian food and their excellent company at reasonable prices.

When Khushis, established in 1947, first re-opened on Antigua Street, Tom decided to forgive the tough-talking owners dire mistreatment of Ernesto Crolla and to lunch in the same location as before several times a week, since hed always enjoyed watching the pedestrians streaming along the pavement outside.

The nearby Shezan Indian Restaurant is a poor mans Khushis. Before its latest expensive refurbishment, it boasted a time-honoured reputation for inflating the bills when compared with the stated menu prices.

However, the basic foodstuff at Jollys isnt obviously of particularly high quality health-wise and, while Vitos more than generous, weve experienced a plethora of problems over the years, including invariably flat soda, stroppy waitresses, sour orange juice, burnt or under-cooked pizza, inadequate vegetables (e.g. just peas), silly knobs of garlic bread, incorrectly selected or cooked steak, badly-boiled potatoes that may have been left-overs and could have caused food-poisoning, and an over-abundance of not-so-great chips.

Silver Bowl (12 Albert Place, Leith Walk, Edinburgh) | The List

Takeaway review Established in 1968, Silver Bowl certainly has a venerable track record in keeping the residents of Leith supplied with Chinese takeaways (and more recently Thai from its sister Albert Street branch).

Punchy, fragrant flavours and fresh ingredients make this a standout choice for Thai and Chinese takeaway cuisine.

Tod mun pla (Thai fishcakes) are vibrant and kao pad keed mao mu (noodles with pork, chilli and holy basil) is a fairly faithful representation of the popular Thai street food dish commonly known as ‘drunken noodles’.

Popular Chinese dishes such as char siu chow mein and special fried rice are enjoyably light rather than the oily, cloying versions served up by so many other similar establishments.

Delivery is efficient too and ordering straightforward thanks to a slick online operation, while a series of special offers and loyalty discounts add to the attraction.

Named after an emperor’s summer palace, Xanadu’s own decor is simple and functional with Chinese scenes on the pale blue walls and wipe-clean cloths on the tables.

On the menu you’ll find all the familiar dishes with a few dim sum options and mainly seafood specials to add some variety.

Other dishes don’t stand out, although cooked well.

A two-course ‘tea time’ menu for £9.90 is served till 9pm, excluding Saturdays, and you can BYOB (although the wine list is very reasonably priced), making Xanadu a good budget choice.

It may not be the ‘stately pleasure-dome’ of Coleridge’s famous poem, but Xanadu is a decent, family-run restaurant that knows how to keep its regulars coming back for more.
