Shri Bheema's – a new Indian restaurant changing dining for people ...

So it was interesting that I was invited out to dine at a new Indian restaurant in Edinburgh that is going the extra mile to help people with food allergies and intolerances to make an informed choice.

The restaurant, on an early Friday evening, was busy with a varied clientele, including a high proportion of Indian families of all ages enjoying the food; always a good sign.

Shri Beema’s serves South and North Indian food and whilst you will find a korma on here, I’d challenge you to further explore some of the delicacies on offer or ask Raj for his advice.

What’s excellent is that the menu explains the common food allergies and then lists each choice with the appropriate key, giving people with food intolerances an informed option.

The Maduri Lamb Suka, tender pieces of lamb marinated and simmered with South Indian spices, seasoned with onion, pepper, and garnished with a hint of coconut and fresh curry leaves was delicious and fragrant as was the Kodi Vepuda, which is finely seasoned chicken, cooked with onion, special Andhra spices and pan fried with garlic, black pepper and curry leaves.

Apparently Shri Bheema’s is owned and managed by “a close-knit family team” that works to present “the most authentic, pure and delicious South and North Indian food at competitive prices”.

I think we can say that Shri Bheema’s is not a business riven with self-doubt, more like one itching with ambition to stud that map with many more red icons to form a restaurant empire.

Scanning the online menu it was pretty obvious that Shri Bheema’s wasn’t going to be taking us down untrodden paths of culinary authenticity, but the online menu did, at least, list a few road-less-travelled Southern Indian dishes that dangled the hope of a restaurant worth visiting.

Yet I can’t stop that sense of disappointment, or ignore the mounting suspicion that Shri Bheema’s website reflects someone’s dream of a restaurant story, rather than the reality of the dining experience.

Vegetable kofta are islands of mushy oiliness in a thick yellow sauce; kothu parotta forms a daunting tower of oily chopped bread that tastes as if doused in liquidised onions; lamb in the Chettinad curry is worryingly jellied; aubergine is impregnated with more of the wretched, smelly cooking oil.

Edinburgh’s second Shri Bheema’s, Shri Bheema’s – Constitution Street is a warm and welcoming haven of contemporary Indian cuisine.

Much like its sister restaurants in Aberdeen, Shri Bheema’s has been recognised by such renowned awards as the British Curry Awards and the Asian Curry Awards so diners can dine with confidence that their dishes are of the finest quality.

A few examples of these delightful small dishes include the tantalising Kodi Vepudu, seasoned chicken pan fried with curry leaves and garlic, and the scrumptious Methu Vadai, fried doughnuts made with urid daal & onions and paired with chutney.

Both mild mannered and spice chasing diners will find something to cater to their tastes in the main menus, with traditional and innovative curries alike being served.

An ideal venue for meals spent with friends and family, Shri Bheema’s – Constitution Street serves all who enter with a smile.

One of two Shri Bheema restaurants in Edinburgh, the Leith branch is on Constitution Street.

Part of an award-winning group of restaurants that stretches from Aberdeen to the south of England, this Shri Bheema is a family-run restaurant specialising in regional specialities from the north and south of India.

From southern Indian dosa pancakes and rice cakes to northern Indian biryani dishes, Shri Bheema specialises in regional Indian cooking.

Representing more northern regions, there are dishes like the Punjab butter chicken; aromatic lamb dishes from Kashmir and Parsi dishes which fuse Persian and Gujerati influences.

Shri Bheema Leith is on Constitution Street.
