It is a phenomenally good ingredient and it is a source of distress to me that my partner in crime, Mr Bite, doesn't 'get' black pudding.

Luckily, the chefs at gastro pub Teuchers Landing in Leith do get it and they have applied their skill to presenting Stornoway black pudding along with lots of other tasty Scottish ingredients in some wonderful dishes.

I knew instinctively that moist pork and well seasoned pudding in this 'Mug of Balls' would marry well and the best man had to be a Sneaky Wee Orkney Stout from the Swannay Brewery (4.2%).

The Mug Menu also includes dessert options and a toothsome portion of Marshmallows with Hot Chocolate Dipping Sauce (£2.95, 4.50) would have been just the ticket with the coffee and bitter chocolate elements of the Sneaky Wee Orkney Stout.

Apparently the Innis and Gunn draft lager is as popular as the mac 'n' cheese mug and I again, imagine another good match.

Relaxed waterfront pub with almost 100% Scottish-sourced food and drink, with an excellent whisky selection.

Teuchters is something of a favourite on The Shore, thanks to its simple yet well-executed food menu and a superb range of Scottish cask beer and single malt whisky.

Its traditional freehouse-style set up makes for a relaxed feel, while the waterfront location means it's a summer go-to for locals (there's free suntan lotion at the bar for those rare sunny days, so tan responsibly, folks).

For a bit to eat there’s the 'mug menu', which sounds strange but works just fine: mug-sized portions of homely food, such as curry, chicken wings and risotto go down a treat.

Non-mug options include a hearty (and hot) beef chilli and a solid burger range, with everything from venison to buffalo available (plus good ol' beef too).

5 of the best beer gardens in Edinburgh - Scotsman Food and Drink

Characterful, well-loved and great value, Teuchters Landing not only has a great selection of whiskies, beers and food, this water front bar also has a beer garden and a pontoon for when the weather is really good.

Even when the sun goes down this pretty little beer garden continues to shine, open flame heaters and fairy lights continue to provide the heat and light and it’s one of the most fun places to be on a warm summer’s night.

Don’t worry if inevitably people get there before you (it’s a popular pub) they also have a decked beer garden hidden away (described as the best kept secret in Edinburgh) out back with stunning views of the Castle.

Described by celebrity chef Rick Stein as “the best pub in the world”, this charming and decidedly eccentric little pub is an Edinburgh favourite with a hidden beer garden that’s a wonderful little sun trap in which to enjoy a beer, glass of wine or a dram from the Canny Man’s expansive range.

Summerhall is home to a brewery, a gin distillery, a Drinks Lab,  an arts venue and this excellent little bar, which just so happens to have its own beer garden in the courtyard.

The pub is housed in a quaint and attractive stone building that was once the ferry terminal for boats arriving from Aberdeen (Teuchter, pronounced choochter, is a lowland Scots name for a highlander) and it has retained much of the original stonework.

Our starter – the prettily presented Peterhead smoked mackerel and lemon cream cheese mousse (£5.95) – was more of a pâté, as it wasn’t even vaguely aerated.

Each of these meaty pieces was placed on a thin, disc-shaped plinth of fondant sweet potato, and drizzled with plenty of port jus that was pretty low on the booze.

Everything else – the three pieces of pale fish, silky celeriac purée, smoky char-grilled potatoes, and black olive, caper and lemon thyme salsa – though good, sort of paled into insignificance (the same thing would happen if I was in the same room as a Bond girl – see, totally invisible, even if I do star jumps and pull a monkey face).

The lemon and poppy seed sponge (£5) was also hard to dislike, with two cubes of syrupy sponge, a dollop of gingery chantilly cream and, top of the bill, some sweetly perfumed and heart-shaped Blacketyside Farm strawberries.

It’s rather nice here and A Room in Leith has settled into its new home.
