The kitchen is always a hive of activity so sometimes there’s a little pause while tools are downed and customers are welcomed, but I was straightaway sitting down and being run through the daily changing specials.

A seasonal Diwali special of aloo chana with puris and lightly sweetened rice sounded good to me.

They proved an enjoyable eat with good quality white fish in crisp, warmly spiced batter.

The puffed puris were a real joy and good for mopping up the delicious sauce of the veggie curry.

Domenico's | The Skinny

food

Italian eaterie titillating the lunch-faithful of Leith with its doorstop made-to-order sandwiches and sensuous pasta dishes.

For more of a good thing, pop along to Domenico's for a bulging dinner menu, all prepared on-site from fresh, individually-sourced ingredients.

Special mention is reserved for the pasta and seafood options: The Skinny sampled Domenico's fillets of smoked salmon and asparagus-stuffed sole in a Sambuca and sundried tomato sauce, and can now think of nothing else.

menu

A popular little establishment down Leith way, still serving long-time favourite dishes despite a change of ownership.

The ownership may have changed at this compact and ever-popular establishment in Leith but much remains the same.

The opening hours have been extended and a few non-Italian dishes have infiltrated the menu.

But, while a click and collect lunchtime service and the addition of Sunday brunch are admirable attempts to attract a new audience, it’s the selection of familiar favourites that keep the regulars coming back.

A creamy risotto or pasta with a choice of accompaniments such as red peppers, tomato and spicy sausage (that packs a punch) bring the authentic Italian touch to the selection of mains.

Chargrilled steaks and burgers cooked from scratch, with a host of toppings and other menu specialities that are well worth the wait Burgers in this pretension-free, friendly Leith diner come piled high with pineapple and jalapeno salsa, fried onions, garlic butter, bacon, blue cheese and a bunch of other toppings - but they don’t come fast.

Chargrilled steaks and burgers are their speciality, but the specials menu also features seafood (mussels with smoked garlic, white wine and cream for example, or tandoori mackerel fillets), plus vegetarian falafel platters and savoury tarts with butternut squash, cashews and honey.

To finish, there’s ice cream on offer, plus simple but moreish desserts like vanilla cheesecake of sticky toffee pudding, and a daily cocktail special - although it’s hard to see past their espresso martini, a welcome buzzy, boozy pick-me-up after a meat and carb-fest.

Still deciding if it’s the burger place for you?

Their website has a burger restaurant game you can play where you try and not mess up orders from hungry, fussy customers, against the clock.

drinks

The most fun you can have down by the docks with a teapot Best known as Leith's much-loved bar-café, it's always important to remember that one of Roseleaf's signature offerings is the pot-tail – cocktails served in chintzy teapots for two or more people.

The brave might start their day with a teapot of Breakfast Club (Finlandia vodka, elderflower, lemon, mint and pink grapefruit) or just have a Rhubarb and Custard instead of dessert at lunch or dinner (rhubarb vodka with lemon and fresh apple juice).
