The Ship on the Shore, Edinburgh: Restaurant Review

Home > Wine & Dine > The Ship on the Shore Leith, that place where The Proclaimers wanted us to believe the sun shines, has a long and illustrious history as a port.

Once settled in I kicked off with the Shetland mussels with garlic and herbs which was at first rather underwhelming, although as I managed to get at the sauce, which lay buried deep beneath a mollusc mountain to marvel at, I finally found some flavour.

I could have done with a bit more punch in the sauce, a little more reduced wine, more garlic, more herbs, more seasoning, more of everything in fact, but it was good enough.

I opted for a special, grilled langoustines with Ship's chips, while my alluring dining companion (who, coincidentally, bears a great resemblance to Ariel, from the Little Mermaid, thus continuing the theme of the evening) went for - predictably, it has to be said - the whole Scottish lobster with garlic and herb butter.

Entry-level at the bar is a glass of house Champagne and three oysters for 14.50, but the options run up to the shared seafood platters, at up to 100 each, for two or three to share, Dinner for two including a very reasonably priced carafe of Muscadet at 19.50, and a glass of house Champagne at 9, came to 121.

The Ship on the Shore Atmospheric Shore-front favourite, featuring fish in all its forms.

The 2018 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £7.95 (+ ).

Those who know Edinburgh’s seafood scene know this for sure: the fruits de mer platter at Ship on the Shore is basically a work of art.

This is the king of the seafood platters, but there are other variations to choose from, as well as a selection of well-executed mains, such as lobster and chips, whole lemon sole and fish curry.

Ship on the Shore has a reputation for decadence and excellence that's undoubtedly well-deserved.

Vegetarian dishes are available for those who prefer not to indulge in the seafood fare and there are always traditional alternative options like haggis and steak on the menu for carnivores who dislike seafood.

Make no mistake, though, the Ship on the Shore aims to prove that Scotland has the best seafood in the world.

I had an urge for fish and chips, and EdinBloggette eats anything with a tail.

As soon as we entered The Ship on the Shore the aroma of the sea hit us, we walked past happy diners tucking into mounds of seafood and EdinBloggette’s eyes lit up.

I decided a Ship’s Hot Shellfish Platter and zesty Sauvignon would be a lovely Sunday treat.

At £80 the platter isn’t exactly cheap, but the quality of the seafood (and a ridiculous number of mussels) made the price tag entirely justifiable.

Provenance plays an important part in The Ship on the Shore, as you would expect with Scotland’s world-famous seafood supplies.

Open 7 days noon-10pm (ship's breakfast served 9am-11am), average main £18 This is the sister restaurant to Edinburgh's Michelin-starred The Kitchin.

Restaurant and takeaway open noon-11pm every day, pizza from £10 When this restaurant opened four years ago it sent out a clear message that on Edinburgh's touristy Royal Mile you could still find seriously good restaurants with seriously interesting menus.

Tues-Sun noon-2pm, 5pm-11pm, Fri and Sat until 11.30pm, Sun 5pm-11pm, average main £15 When eating out in Edinburgh it's not unreasonable to expect the very best Scottish meat and fish.

Mon-Fri noon-2pm, 6pm-10pm, Sat noon-3pm, 6pm-11pm, Sun 6pm-10pm (closed on Sundays in October), average main £24 Martin Wishart's in Leith is probably Edinburgh's best outright restaurant (with a correspondingly expensive menu and long waiting list to match).

Mon-Sat noon-3pm, 6pm-11pm, Sun noon-11pm, average main £15 This small restaurant has been satisfying sushi cravings for as long as I can remember but as its popularity has risen so has the competition for seats.

It is on the Shore but it's not a ship Essentially this is a seafood restaurant sitting by the Water of Leith, near the old docks entrance.

The décor involves lots of wood and a maritime theme but if you catch it between 9am and 11am the Ship has a daily breakfast menu with a certain touch of class.
