Malmaison Brasserie, Edinburgh – The Edinburgers

Now, not one to miss out on a good offer, I spotted a fantastic deal on Itison for Malmaison Edinburgh.

The offer was 2 Classic Malmaison Burgers, fries and relish plus a glass of wine or a schooner of beer each.

The Mal Classic Burger is topped with Gruyère, Ayrshire bacon and served with gem lettuce, beef tomato, red onion, dill pickle, fries burger relish.

The burger was fantastic, it tasted like a proper homemade burger, lots of flavour and still a little pink in the middle.

All the little bits added up to make this a very tasty meal and definitely something for a rainy day.

A traditional brunch buffet table overflowing with good quality food at a reasonable price, it is all you need to draw people in and keep them happy and that's all they've done.

In fact the biggest Sunday lunch in town (or city) is only £19.95 per person for your unlimited buffet, main course and dessert and only £7.95 for children.

I think perhaps it best be kept filed away on a Sunday lunch as there is more than enough choice on the buffet to keep any child happy, provided they are used to eating good quality fresh food.

A simple, almost insignificant gesture completely unprompted from the member of staff behind the bar who just wanted to go the extra mile and offer exceptional customer service and make a wee girl happy.

That pretty much sums up our experience of Malmaison, it doesn't need flash gimmicks, it doesn't need to do anything revolutionary, it does simple, comfortable Sunday lunch, the way you would want to do in your own house if you had family around.

Housed in the eye-catching Malmaison hotel on Tower Place, the Chez Mal restaurant enjoys spectacular views over the Port of Leith.

The menus at Chez Mal restaurant change with the seasons and are neatly balanced between classic brasserie dishes and contemporary international choices.

From the starters, this means that diners can choose from dishes such as the prawn cocktail and chicken liver parfait or crab tacos, Thai BBQ chicken lollipops and fritto misto.

Main courses might be a rack of herb-crusted West Country lamb or pasta with grilled tiger prawns, cherry tomatoes, chilli and crab bisque.

Malmaison hotel is at One Tower Place in Leith.

Malmaison Glasgow: Dining Review on Undiscovered Scotland

Most dining at Malmaison Glasgow takes place in the brasserie, which is found in what previously served as a crypt when St Jude's was a Greek Orthodox Church.

Those here to enjoy lunch and dinner choose from the brasserie menu, which is supplemented by a more rapidly changing list of daily specials, which when we visited comprised no fewer than 4 starters and 4 mains to add to the 8 starters and 8 mains on the main menu.

The observant will notice on the menu an introduction by the Head Chef, Graham Digweed, which is worth repeating because it helps give an idea of the approach adopted by Malmaison Glasgow to the food it serves: "I have hunted high and low but not too far or wide to bring Lanarkshire's hidden food secrets to your brasserie table.

There must obviously be limitations to this, such as the excellent stuffed squid starter on the specials menu when we visited, but such an up-front statement about what you might call "as local as possible" is very welcome.

With a fairly frequently changing menu an account of any particular meal can only be a snapshot, but it is worth saying that every element of a three course meal for two was excellent.
