Mia Porto Due

Review analysis
menu   food

The food is a fusion between authentic Portuguese fare and classic Italian cuisine.

Mia Porto Due is famous for its succulent espetada (meat kebabs), which are served on metal hooks that hang from the traditional stands locked to your table or tailor made modern stands clamped on your table in the piaza area.

You can choose between beef, pork, chicken mixed or monk fish and tiger prawns and the espetada is drizzled in garlic butter and served with your choice of seasonal veg.

We also love the Chicken Piri Piri and the Borrego (lamb shank and mash in a Portuguese gravy).

Porto A.S. 1829 Hotel Review, Portugal | Travel

One of Europe’s oldest stationery shops has been converted into a modern yet cosy hotel in the heart of Porto’s downtown area.

Artefacts from the former store add to the hotel’s stylish interior design and a street terrace provides a pleasant spot to unwind.

South of Gaia, the fishing villages are salty and sweary; on the Porto side of the river, Foz do Douro is a posh suburb where the river meets the ocean and, further north, Matosinhos offers rock-cut swimming pools, sunsets and superb fish dinners.

Starting east of Porto’s centre, Maus Hábitos (Rua Passos Manuel 178, 4th floor, +351 222 087 268), which means bad habits, is a hip space on the roof of an art deco car park.

Beardy and hip, Café Candelabro (Rua da Conceição 3) is a bar with simple snacks plus a bookshop – specialising in offbeat cinema, photography, theatre and art – in one cool, small space.

Also recommended is Casa Santo António (Rua da Assunção 40, +351 938 704 632), a “gourmet tasca” with a friendly vibe and great regional ingredients – try alheira, a smoked chicken or game sausage.

In Foz, upscale-ish Bar Tolo (Rua Senhora da Luz 185) offers everything from petiscos (bar snacks) to full meals.

Inside, the restaurant channels a Portuguese tavern vibe, with laterite stone arched windows, Portuguese porcelain plates on the ceiling, and Goan photographer Vince Costa’s evocative black and white photos from Goa and Lisbon adorning the walls.

“It was a year and half ago when I was sitting at home enjoying my mum’s Goan food and I thought, ‘why can’t I have this food in a restaurant,’” says de Souza.

The flavours are quintessentially Goan as de Souza brings in some ingredients and condiments from Goa, including chorizo, vinegar, jaggery, spices, and cashew bitters made from Goan feni (that go into the aforementioned tiki cocktails).

It’s a traditional Goan restaurant and I’m curating my version of Goan-Portuguese food based on my childhood experiences and my travels”, says de Souza.
