Laughing Horse @ The Cellar Monkey | The Skinny

A great new local hangout bar in the Marchmont Area of Edinburgh, that's been recently refurbished and is located underneath the Argyle Bar.

With a full food and drinks menu in a relaxed style, this is a great new place to visit during the Fringe.

With burgh loch long gone, if you fancy a dip in Marchmont then Warrender baths is the only place to go: built in 1887 this beautiful Victorian swimming pool is now kitted out with modern gym and sauna.

Lines of students walking to lectures (or more likely stumbling home from a night out) are a common sight in Marchmont, but all that could have been very different.

While the (just) affordable flats are good news for Edinburgh students, the locals may tell you otherwise… It may be easy to blame students and their love of own brand alcohol for the lack of bars in Marchmont, but it’s actually the result of a historical ban on licensed premises.

Today we’re free to booze in bars and if you are looking for a drink The Cellar Monkey on Argyle Place is your best bet; the  student deals will keep the night cheap and if conversation isn’t flowing as quickly as the alcohol you can always pull out one of their many board games.

Its best dishes are the Scottish Lamb and Wild Mushroom Risotto, and luckily there’s no rabbit on the menu… Dodging cyclists is an occupational hazard of living in Marchmont and if you can’t beat them why not join them?

Edinburgh Fringe Review: Jordan Brookes, Laughing Horse ...

Review analysis
food

One of the running themes in the autobiographical show is the classic Fringe trope of being shaped by a troubled childhood.

Then again there are some gags that are pushed so far - such as giving the audience the finger in various ways - they become funnier the more he does it.

In various bullet point flashbacks and flash-forwards Brookes shows us the stages of his life, from being born (excellent) to loony tunes decrepitude.

But I get the impression Brookes knows what he wants to do and is doing it.

This show is definitely worth fifty minutes of your time, but I have the sneaking suspicion that future Brookes shows will be even better.
