First time visit and enjoyable premises pretty quiet when we went in but there was a hurricane outside so probably to be expected.
Was at first disappoint mall but enough of real ales and enjoyed the rugby cup ale as my mate enjoyed his cider.

Title: The Earl himself would have been proud The Earl is a great pub, the welcoming staff and friendly locals make every visit to the Earl a joy.
Boasting a juke box, televised sports and tasteful decoration make the right decision and make the Earl your local.
The Earl of Marchmont is a great wee local boozer...ok, it doesn't do food because it isn't big enough, so what ?
The locals are fine, a good mix of tribes, Huns / Tims / Hibbys and Jambos !
And it even has a non-smoking area.... Title: Possibly the most unfriendly pub in Edinburgh Been drinking in this smokey athmosphere lacking den, on and off for ten years.

food
Much like its Canongate sister the White Horse, the Earl is a grand mixture of classic Edinburgh local and funked-up eclectic touches.
The atmosphere is generally convivial, and the drinks selection is a strong suit, with a great mixture of cocktails (available Mon–Thu) and intelligently selected house wines sitting alongside traditional whiskies and ales.
