Discovering Nonna's Kitchen - a family run Italian restaurant in ...

Today Gino Stornaiuolo welcomes us to Nonna’s Kitchen, the fabulous Italian restaurant he runs with his family in Edinburgh’s Morningside.

While Gino and his family are dedicated to making customers feel like they’re coming into their own home, we wanted to find out why Morningside was Gino’s number one choice.

I don’t think Morningside has changed all much that but Edinburgh certainly has.

Morningside is definitely an attractive place to live in Edinburgh.

We have a theatre, we have a great independent cinema, we have lots of boutique shops . . . there’s just an incredible vibe and the sense of being part of a community right in the city.

Nonna's Kitchen (45 Morningside Road, Edinburgh) | The List

This is neighbourhood dining at its best, with regulars and newcomers alike welcomed warmly by son Gino and his front of house team.

There’s a solid menu with an occasional twist on the usual suspects and the odd exuberant flourish, such as ravioli filled with pumpkin imported from Cremona, and a reasonably priced wine list.

The focus on quality produce is evident in starters such as scallops with black pudding and pesto.

But it’s the specials list that allows Mimmo to showcase his skills.

Here are daily changing offerings such as simple but exquisite sea bass with aubergine and potatoes or perhaps monkfish pieces in tomato and basil served with arborio rice.

If Pasta, Pizza and plenty of other delicious dishes are the order of the day, then these top Italian restaurants are the places to go.

Run by well known and hugely popular chef Rosario Sartore, who brings his family’s cooking all the way from Naples to this homely little restaurant on Dalry Road.

With huge portions and a straight forward and honest approach to Neapolitan dishes, you’ll find it is one of the best restaurants in town, never mind just for Italian cuisine.

The menu is huge and covers all corners of the Italian culinary map, with their pastas and pizzas considered to be some of the best in the city.

Frizzante has actually won an award for gluten-free catering and was a finalist last year in the Scottish Italian Awards for “Best family restaurant.”

It’s a rare thing these days to find a truly great local eatery, but Nonna’s Kitchen is just that.

Opened in 2010 by Gino Stornaiuolo, this family-run spot does a great line in tasty, thin-base pizzas and artisan pastas, as well as a memorable clutch of fish and meat mains.

Daily specials keep the adults happy, while a tasty kids menu keeps the nippers suitably satiated.

Smaller portions of mains can be made should you want to mix and match, with popular Italian staples like Pizza Salsiccia Piccante, Linguine Frutti di Mare and Lasagne di Nonna offering as much flavour and interest as specials, namely the Pumpkin Ravioli or the largely excellent Fish of the Day.

Wash it down with Nonna’s Italian-only wine list and the job’s a good‘un.
