Cote Brasserie - Gluten Free Edinburgh

Review analysis

Cote Brasserie on Frederick Street has got one of the best gluten free menus I have seen!

After the super friendly welcome, the menu that is handed over is the real deal – with plenty of choice, gluten free bread and even gluten free chips.

Cote is part of a chain and I have visited others and found them to be good quality brasseries with plenty of choice and tasty food.

I recently enjoyed lunch, paid for by a gluten-eating lawyer, which confirmed that this is a good option for a gluten free lunch.

Choices include some interesting salads, steak frites, chicken and chips, fish stew and other mains.

With Franco-phile originator of Edinburgh Foody, Danielle, now down south for a new life of baked goods and grandchildren, Team Edinburgh Foody 2.0 accepted an invitation to try the new Côte restaurant in Frederick Street and do a little bonding.

I started with the July special of artichoke and goats cheese tartin, followed by the special of whole herb-crusted rack of lamb served pink with roasted garlic and extra virgin olive oil potato puree and braised minted peas.

The chargrilled sourdough with soft goats cheese, roasted baby artichokes with black olive tapenade, was very salty and could have been complemented by a sweet red onion marmalade to cut through the saltiness (a personal preference).

Vivid, vinegary tomatoes, capers and salty black olives lounged on sourdough, drizzled generously in oil and served with whipped goats cheese.

As for the food, I love fish, so had a double dose with prawns for starter and salmon with ratatouille for main, followed by my all-time favourite dessert, tarte tatin.

Côte Brasserie (51 Frederick Street, Edinburgh) | The List

Formerly a shop selling high-end traditional cookers, it's now a restaurant selling top-notch traditional cooking.

Desserts are traditional French favourites, likely to include an apple tarte tatin that rounds off an experience typical of the Parisian brasseries on which Côte is modelled.

Food review: Côte Christmas menu 2017 | Foodie Explorers

We ordered from the Christmas dinner menu, which is £34.95 for 3 courses with fluffy sourdough bread (with a crisp crust) and mixed black and green olives included but there is also a smaller, cheaper Christmas lunch menu offering two courses for £18.95 or three for £22.95 which excludes the bread and olives.

It had to be the duck confit for me, done a l’orange style, and it was something special – crispy savoury skin, sea salt and a lot of tender duck served on a bed of perfectly-cooked sautéed potatoes, baby spinach, garlic and parsley in a fruity orange and veal jus.

Côte has impressed me on all three of my visits there, the food on every occasion has been to a high standard and there was nothing we were unhappy about during our meal, making this an ideal spot for a Christmas lunch or dinner with family, friends or colleagues.

See here for all the + Lovely interior + Great service + Filling winter food + Good portion sizes – we were both stuffed!

We visited Côte Brasserie – Glasgow, 41-43 W Nile St, Glasgow G1 2PT, which is centrally located between Central and Queen Street stations and ideal for visiting by train, bus or car (there’s an NCP Car Park at the southern end of West Nile Street on Mitchell Street and a City Parking car park at the top of West Nile Street at 97 Cowcaddens Rd).

The first is that tummy twirling, fist pumping feeling when one of my amazing candidates gets the job and the second is getting invited to menu launches and pre-opening trial days, where we get to sample our client’s delicious food and assess their service!

On Monday of last week I was invited along to the pre-opening of the brand sparkling, new Cote Restaurant in Edinburgh’s Fredrick Street.

I booked a wee table for 4 and took along Richie- the boyf, his mama Mary and sis Angela.

Richie ordered charcuterie board – which was beautifully presented, tasty and fresh, but lacked a little in ‘moisture’ – no butter for the bread or olive oil/ balsamic for the side salad.

A Breton stew – fish stew for those as clueless as me, Rump of lamb, fillet steak and the corn fed chicken.

Here you will find only authentic French cuisine, cooked with honesty.

This is relaxed, all-day dining at its best and, luckily for the people of Edinburgh, this branch occupies a gorgeous spot on Frederick Street in the heart of the New Town, meaning classic French dishes are never too far away.

The space is light with neutral colours, tones and plenty of wood, while original fireplaces and well-spaced, almost vintage-looking seating adds an unmistakable French feel.

That said, if you’d rather something a little more substantial then do try the traditional French beef bourguignon, the roast duck breast with potato gratin or the rich, marvelously satisfying cassoulet de Toulouse.

As it’s clear to see, Côte Brasserie brings authentic flavours of France right into the heart of Edinburgh.
