As regular readers of this blog will know, I am friends with Emma from Vegan Edinburgh and Ann from A Quirky Lifestyle.

The manager introduced us to the evening, which was vegetarian (with vegan adaptions already built into the menu).

As you can imagine, these had great colour and tasted yummy, but could have possibly done with a touch more seasoning.

This was a refreshing palate of flavours and finished the meal off nicely.

Emma had a lovely hunk of orange cake, which she kindly let me try.

We reviewed the George Street branch of Café Andaluz back in 2016 but thought we’d give the new branch in Old Town a whirl.

Café Andaluz has a number of offers and we availed ourselves of the three tapas and a dessert from £16.95 per person (some supplements for a few dishes can make it slightly more expensive).

The vieiras con Serrano were beautiful scallops with Serrano ham which sat on a bed of creamed leeks.

This branch is just as good as the one on George Street and is a good alternative if you are in Old Town.

Yes Cost £72 for two of the three tapas and a dessert deals plus bread, olives and four cocktails.

Cadiz, Edinburgh, restaurant review - Scotsman Food and Drink

Cadiz offers the feel of an upmarket seafood bar, serving induglent food and cocktails in a relaxed atmosphere, finds Gaby Soutar In JG Ballard’s sci-fi book, High-Rise, the toffs live towards the top of the eponymous building, working classes and poverty stricken towards the bottom.

While the pavement-level restaurant is clattery and lively with people-pleasing pile-’em-high tapas, its better half, Cadiz, has gone for an upmarket seafood bar feel.

You also pay the premium to have a top deck view of a boring bit of George Street (specifically, Hollister and The East India Tea Company), though Cadiz is offering a set price lunch/pre-theatre menu at £19.95 for two courses, £23.95 for three.

It was served cold (or you can have it hot for the same price, with garlic butter and skinny fries) and came with a pot of slick smoked paprika aioli and a rather boring “Cadiz house salad” of red chard, tomatoes, cucumber and peppers.

Once you’ve been fireman’s lift-ed out of the building and they’ve done an inspection and declared it safe to return, the flames have burnt out and there’s a good crispy lid on your dish of slick custard.

Café Andaluz is a Spanish tapas restaurant on George Street in Edinburgh city centre.

Please note that Café Andaluz has two branches in Edinburgh.

The restaurant has a wide selection of tapas but the common thread is that they are all made from fresh ingredients and prepared on the premises.

Creative vegetarian dishes like the sliced mushrooms with garlic, truffle oil and smoked Tetilla cheese on croutons nestle alongside seafood dishes such as the crisp, fried baby squid or the classic gambas pil pil: hot, roast prawns with olive oil, fresh chillies and garlic.

Carnivorous eaters might prefer the spicy chorizo sausage sautéed with sweet red onions in red wine or the lamb chops scented with rosemary, thyme and garlic.
