The wide array of brunch options available here means that it caters to almost every palate.

Deli platters with a choice of delectable homemade breads, olives and dips nestle beside flat bread pizzas, an impressive variety of salads, crepes and wonderfully decadent pancakes.

The full breakfast is generous and delicious and includes their special recipe baked beans (which are rather better than the standard variety) and homemade tattie scones (potato scones to the uninitiated) which have rightly gained them quite a following.

Food for three, excluding drinks, £30.35 Gaby says: “My option, the chicken, chorizo and pinto bean stew (£4.45), was … simple, with a turmeric-flavoured tomato base, a topping of chives and coriander and a decent amount of all the billed ingredients.

Dinner for two, excluding drinks, £41 Gaby says: “Opened by the bods behind Stravaigin (recently awarded a Michelin Bib Gourmand), and the Ubiquitous Chip, it’s in the former premises of what was once their branch of Stravaigin 2… This place, one of the handful of Vietnamese restaurants in Scotland, is rather marvellous.

Lunch for two, excluding drinks, £29 Gaby says: “This place is all about the savouries and spices.

Dinner for two, excluding drinks, £37.75 Gaby says: “This place is open from 8am-10pm and provides an adjacent deli, as well as an eating space offering breakfasts, lunches, dinners, teas, late live music and a general hangout for Fife’s hipsters … The menu offers soups and antipasti platters for starters, and around five main courses.”

Dinner for two, excluding drinks, £39.55 Gaby says: “This place has been around since 1982, and is so much part of Edinburgh’s culinary landscape that it’s easy to forget it’s there.

It’s clear that a lot of love and attention goes into the food in this bright and colourful deli café, with its novel twist on the lunchtime menu: a choice of flatbreads, crêpes, tacos and tarts.

Deli salads are a big draw, loaded with ingredients like quinoa, mint and beetroot, celeriac, spelt and rocket.

There is also a big push towards gluten-free and vegan versions of many of the dishes (do ask, as this isn’t always mentioned on the menu).

The deli does a busy take-away trade and if you’re sitting in you need to order at the counter, but they do bring your food to your table.

Their all-day brunch menu boasts Arbroath smokies, French toast, oatmeal and breakfast smoothies, along with the option of add-ons like haggis and black pudding.

Their brunch menu includes Belgian waffles and full Scottish breakfasts, as well as less traditional (but perhaps more exciting) Asian inspired dishes.

Here, brunch is served until 12pm, and – with a choice of freshly baked scones, artisan rolls, porridge and veggie breakfasts – there’s something to satisfy all tastes.

Located on Barony Street in Edinburgh’s East End, the Broughton Delicatessen and Cafe does a fantastic cooked breakfast, with one of the best tattie scones you’ll ever taste.

Serving brunch from 9am to 4pm at the weekends, Smoke Stack are Edinburgh’s waffle connoisseurs, and their offerings certainly aren’t run of the mill.
