Basics are far more important than the pretty shiny bits.

That is why it is nice to see Smoke Stack has all the sparkly bits, but also has good food, served in a friendly way at a reasonable price.

We were greeted in a friendly and professional way and shown to our table, the Express menu waiting for us and Express it would need to be... It seems though, the Smoke Stackers are adept at what they do.

Food and drinks orders were taken promptly and awesome freshly made strawberry milkshake and a fruity Malibu cocktail were both delivered as quick as it is possibly to deliver freshly made drinks from real fruit.

This chic, contemporary-style café and grill serves up a delightful array of salads, sandwiches, burgers and steaks.

Their Asian steak salad is a real treat, glazed in chilli soy sauce, served with toasted sesame seeds and a blend of ginger and soy.

Their all-day brunch menu boasts Arbroath smokies, French toast, oatmeal and breakfast smoothies, along with the option of add-ons like haggis and black pudding.

Their brunch menu includes Belgian waffles and full Scottish breakfasts, as well as less traditional (but perhaps more exciting) Asian inspired dishes.

Here, brunch is served until 12pm, and – with a choice of freshly baked scones, artisan rolls, porridge and veggie breakfasts – there’s something to satisfy all tastes.

Located on Barony Street in Edinburgh’s East End, the Broughton Delicatessen and Cafe does a fantastic cooked breakfast, with one of the best tattie scones you’ll ever taste.

Serving brunch from 9am to 4pm at the weekends, Smoke Stack are Edinburgh’s waffle connoisseurs, and their offerings certainly aren’t run of the mill.

Describing itself as “Edinburgh’s first gourmet steak restaurant,” Kyloe only serves the best Scottish beef dry aged for a minimum of 28 days.

Tender cuts of rump, sirloin, ribeye and t-bone – seasoned with their signature steak rub – are served up from locally sourced farms, with most expertly prepared on the bone.

Probably not, and although there are a few non-meat options on the menu, cuts of beef are very much a way of life here, with a range of 21-35 day aged cuts of sirloin, fillet, ribeye or t-bone there to satisfy diners carnivorous cravings.

All 21 day aged steaks come from the Club’s registered butchers and the knowledgeable staff are trained to advise on which cut to go for based on the customer’s individual tastes.

If you are feeling adventurous and are sharing, then we recommend the Butcher’s Block for two – a variety of steak flavours and cuts including their 30 day aged Fillet 8oz, 50 day aged grain fed Ribeye 8oz, 30 day aged Rump 8oz and brisket stuffed marrow bone.

A popular fixture on Edinburgh’s Broughton Street since the 1990s, Smoke Stack is a laidback steak house and bar.

They are dry-aged for at least 21 days and served with chips, green salad, mash or new potatoes.

Moving away from the a la carte menu, Smoke Stack offers set daily menus, a breakfast selection and, at the weekends, a brunch/lunch menu.

Smoke Stack is on Broughton Street in Edinburgh city centre.

The Playhouse Theatre and Multrees Walk are also a five minute walk.
