Clearly many customers are regulars (always a good sign) and the Basement restaurant can become very busy at times and so food can be served in the bar as well as customers moving from the bar to the restaurant, depending on demand.

Although there are a number of Mexican dishes on the menu, including burritos, chilli con carne, nachos, fajitas and Mexican fish cakes, it is probably more accurate to describe the Basement as serving a wide range of good traditional pub food, ranging from mussels and paté to steak pie and sea bass.

My lunch companion chose as a main course sea bass, which wasn't just covered in ordinary beer batter but, according to the menu, Grolsch beer batter, accompanied by sautéed potato and salad.

The Basement bar and restaurant is located at 10/12a Broughton Street, Edinburgh EH1 3RJ.

Telephone number for reservations is 0131 557 0097 but there is also a convenient online booking link on their Web site The Basement has thrived for around 15 years in a very competitive environment by giving the customers what they want - a wide range of good quality, fresh food at reasonable prices.

Provençal amuse bouche of panisse Homemade Focaccia The olive oil here tastes fresh and matches the quality of the warm home-made focaccia which was a nice diversion while we were waiting on our starters to arrive.

Homemade Focaccia and delicious olive oil Starters My chowder arrived and was thick with delicious chunks of Hebridean crab with turnip, tangy buttermilk and a scattering of chives.

Gin and Lemon Le Roi Fou – Best New Restaurant Le Roi Fou was recently awarded Best New Restaurant at the Scottish Food Awards, and it’s easy to see why.

There is a comfortable neighbourhood restaurant feel about the place already which added to the interesting menu makes Le Roi Fou a natural choice.

Long-standing New Town eatery offering food with a Mexican influence, a large selection of tequilas and a popular bar.

If you’re looking for flavour-packed and fiery food, a killer drinks menu and buzzing atmosphere, The Basement ticks all the right boxes.

Located below street level – as the name might suggest – the Día de Muertos artwork, welcoming aroma of sizzling meat, and excellent tequila menu all help fuel the understated, edgy vibe that drives this bar.

Known for its good quality, imaginative food, carefully chosen drinks list and home-spun cocktails, served by knowledgeable staff in eclectic surroundings.

It is advisable to book a table any day of the week as tables always seem to be busy in the separate restaurant area, however the same menu is served in the bar.

Gaucho, Edinburgh, restaurant review - Scotsman Food and Drink

Stick with steak at Edinburgh's Gaucho or you might be disappointed, says Gaby Soutar I need to invest in some night vision goggles.

This featured three petite helpings, and we all liked our bites of limey tuna ceviche, with cola-cube coloured pieces of fish and a bolster of creamy guacamole, while the soft shell crab causita featured a couple of tempura battered limbs, a dollop of smoked paprika mayonnaise, parsley vinaigrette and, on the side, a stub of what tasted and looked a lot like cold mashed potato.

When it came to mains, I wish one of us had tried their steak, but some bad ordering meant the closest we got was the lomo a la Milanese (£19.95).

Well, apart from the half lemon that came with my option, which featured two insole-sized pieces of dry and fibrous “tenderised fillet steak”.

Our grilled swordfish steak (£21.95) was OK, though a little grey and overdone, and came with a pleasant crushed and smoked chickpea mixture, as well as a pointless pyre of chopped raw red onion.

The recent refurbishment has only added to the charm of this little gem with colorful fabrics and painted chairs, a delightfully quirky display of suspended plant pots, and some excellent pieces by local artists.

Kyloe: Gourmet Steak Restaurant & Grill, Edinburgh

food

Welcome to Edinburgh’s first gourmet steak restaurant.

The name Kyloe, an old Scots word for Highland beef cattle, was chosen for the restaurant as it represents the strength and versatility of Scottish beef produce.

We use cuts from pedigree Aberdeen Angus – supplied by some of Scotland’s top farms and butchers – to bring our customers the best possible steak experience.

Our first floor restaurant can be found in The Rutland Hotel at Edinburgh’s West End and boasts enviable views of Edinburgh Castle.

We look forward to welcoming you to Kyloe.

On the menu at The Basement in Edinburgh’s city centre you’ll of course find all of the old Mexican favourites, from tacos to fajitas and quesadillas, but as well as these classics the menu also boasts some lesser-known but equally as delicious South American dishes.

Wash it all down with a cocktail or two from The Basement’s lengthy selection, or head on over during the day for a Mexican-inspired brunch like the breakfast burrito or huevos rancheros.

Located on Broughton Street in Edinburgh’s city centre, The Basement is a popular choice with those seeking out a piece of South America in the Scottish capital.
