Edinburgh - REVIEW – The Cellar Door Patisserie, George IV Bridge ...

The Cellar Door Patisserie proudly takes place on George IV Bridge above the Cellar Door Restaurant, which was formerly the Olive Branch Bistro.

All the choices looked mouthwatering, but what I like about this place is, that they have little samples of the cakes to try before you buy.

Chocolatey chocolate cake?

The carrot cake (£2.50) was so heavenly moist and delicious that my friend immediately chose that option and I went for the more unusual choice of plum Madeira cake (£2.50).

We sliced them in half so we could experience both of our choices and the carrot cake was so perfectly moist with topping to die for – I honestly think it’s my current favourite cake in the whole of Edinburgh!

As our return flight back to Glasgow wasn't until 8.00pm, it gave us time to wander the streets of Cardiff before enjoying a lazy afternoon tea at Laguna Kitchen Bar, which is housed within the Park Plaza Hotel.

Whilst the traditional Appletini is a fresh blend of sweet and sour, Nicola's drink managed to recreate the true flavours of a spiced apple, although I personally think these flavours are more suited to a cold winters evening rather than a warm summer's day.

This was the first time that I had ever had afternoon tea so was unsure of the correct protocol, fortunately for me, Nicola is a bit of a seasoned professional and kept me right by guiding me through the extensive selection of teas before the waiter came back to take our order.

Afternoon tea is very deceptive, when the cake stand was delivered to our table I honestly thought that we would be finished in no time at all.

The cakes came back in a delicate bag shaped from tin foil which was nice, what wasn't nice was that for the second time in Cardiff, our bill had an "optional" 10% service charge added.

Review: Juniper Cruises – Gin tastings on the Union Canal The Lochrin Belle We love gin and also the fact that there are so many new Scottish ones to choose from – the only dilemma is deciding which one.

Your first port of call should be the Union Basin at Fountainbridge where you can board the Juniper Gin Tasting Union canal cruise and enjoy a relaxing two hours enjoying five of the finest Scottish gins around.

A truly 100% Scottish Gin and Tonic Next up was a real 100% Scottish treat – Crossbill Gin that sources all of its ingredients (including the elusive Scottish juniper berry) from Scotland.

This was my favourite gin of the evening (maybe because it was served towards the start of the cruise but also because it was served with the only Scottish tonic on the market just now, Walter Gregor from Summer House Drinks.

The result was an explosion of flavour and a sophisticated end to the cruise (although by this time I wasn’t feeling very Lemon Cheesecake Needless to say, by the end of the cruise everyone was feeling very jolly indeed and you can enjoy this gin tasting journey for yourself in November and then from Spring next year.

The Olive Branch delivery from Broughton - Order with Deliveroo

Olive Branch Bistro (91 Broughton Street, Edinburgh) | The List

Smart yet relaxed independent bistro, with an interesting menu delivering finely tuned, classic cooking.

Homely yet sophisticated, the Olive Branch Bistro on Edinburgh's bustling Broughton Street is an ideal spot for a quick lunch when in town, a more leisurely evening meal, or brunch at the weekend (their brunch menu is served until 4pm).

With large windows looking out onto the street, it’s great for people-watching, and the muted décor and sanded floors create a relaxed vibe.

Sitting on a bed of crab mac ‘n’ cheese, it’s a lovely balance of stylish cuisine with good old comfort food.

For pudding, the cheesecake changes daily, alongside a standard range of desserts, or try cheese served with the Olive Branch’s own chutney and pickles.
