Gay Friendly Restaurant Review - Treacle Edinburgh

Review analysis
food   location   drinks   ambience

I would not hesitate to recommend Treacle, on Broughton Road, Edinburgh as a wonderful, (more or less) healthy gay friendly place to eat in the city!

It’s described as a bar / restaurant with a focus on local and seasonal food, and incredibly good cocktails.

We arrived quite late (around 8.15pm on a Wednesday night) and I swear my gaydar was ringing for the duration of the time I was there; I guess the relaxed atmosphere, good food and proximity to the nearby gay bars makes it a favourite haunt for the LGBT community.

The food menu is a twist on the traditional bar snack, with burgers and pies made from seasonal produce, sweet potato and parsnip chips and open sandwiches, and mains all cost around £10, which isn’t bad for the portion size!

Whilst the food was good (I wish I’d had room to try the deep fried jam sandwich, their signature dessert) you shouldn’t go to Treacle and not try their cocktails.

Their latest menu is very Asian inspired with Banh Mi (Vietnamese Style sandwiches), rice and noodles bowls filled with eastern spices and ingredients like red chilli, pak choi, ginger, galangal, turtle beans and lotus roots; and Big Salads featuring tiger prawns, mangoes, toasted peanuts and diakon.

Treacle pulled through and she was able to dive into the Treacle Ramen Bowl which was overflowing with kafir lime, rice noodles, ginger, coriander leaf, holy basil, galangal, kale and noodles.

I ate the Avocado Rice Bowl with Chicken.

It combined a lot of my favourite things to eat – chicken, avocado, brown rice, coconut and lime.

The cocktails are outstanding and there is a long list to choose from, so start pondering what to drink well before you order your food; unless of course you just stay there all night and work your way through the cocktail menu!

Brunch Treacle (Edinburgh) - TopBrunch

Situated on Broughton Street, Treacle is a bar and kitchen serving breakfast and lunch for a very reasonable price.

The place is nicely decorated with exposed brick walls and a cool leather quilted bar.

The breakfast menu includes full Scottish breakfast, house batch sweet potato with black bean, quinoa hash browns, poached eggs & avocado, grilled cheese madame with pulled pork, Emmental & fried egg, eggs benedict with hollandaise and salmon, bacon, avocado or spinach and last but not least Belgian waffles with bacon & maple syrup or with blueberries, chia seeds & pistachio butter.

Treacle have recently revamped their menu, with lots of flavourful food options for vegans.

They’re also really well-renowned for their cocktails, so this is the perfect place for a bite to eat and a drink with friends.

At the time of writing, the vegan offering consisted of: Last time we visited, the food at Treacle was delicious.

Treacle has a really solid selection for vegans that is imaginative and flavourful.

Pair that with a couple of tasty cocktails and a great atmosphere, and you’ve got a perfect evening on your hands.

Sandwiches, burgers, pies, and noodles, alongside sharing platters and small snacks, ensure that there's always something on offer to satisfy your craving.

There are some irresistible desserts to finish off and the drinks menu includes a stunning array of delectable cocktails.

It has a trendy feel but it's not exclusive and that makes it a nice place to hang out for drinks after you've eaten a yummy lunch.

WHEN I opened Ondine in Edinburgh, my aim was to make it Scotland’s top seafood restaurant.

I love the fact that every month is different at Ondine and even our dessert menu switches from indulgent in winter to refreshing in summer.

There is one exception and one dish we have never had off the menu at any time of the year and it is a dessert.

Bake in the oven for 10 minutes before removing the beans, brush with a little egg wash at this point and bake for a further five or six minutes until golden brown.

Pour the mixture into the warm, blind-baked pastry case leaving about 1cm space below the rim of tart.

A buzzy bar with a lot to offer, Treacle’s creative cocktails and menus inspired by the east rarely disappoint.

The 2017/18 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+ ).

Broughton Street boasts more than its fair share of good eating and drinking establishments, and a recently refurbed and refreshed Treacle continues to hold its own as one of the most popular.

Cocktails with tongue in cheek monikers pack a flavoursome punch, with the likes of fresh tarragon, curry leaf and celery bitters cropping up in the mix.

Far-flung influences dominate the menu, from banh mi and nasi goreng to pho and poke.

Ondine, Edinburgh: restaurant review | Life and style | The Guardian

food

Meal for two, including wine and service: £125 It is serious food which encourages me to get my kit off.

As the glossy, butter-slicked heap of crimson shell and claw, pearly oyster, fat-lipped mussel and clams landed on the table I slipped off my jacket and rolled up my sleeves.

Ondine, which occupies a first-floor space perched above Victoria Street with wraparound views of some of Edinburgh's finest bits, is shiny and black and silver and wipe-down.

Certainly it's hard to imagine a seafood restaurant in the city without cullen skink, that great gut-filling fish soup, on the menu; crowds would gather on the Royal Mile with pitchforks and tartan-pimped tins of shortbread.

Here though, it is less a classic soup than something to be eaten with a trowel, a stew of cubed potatoes and smoked fish and just enough cream to fur the arteries.
