With so many bars and pubs in Edinburgh that have beautiful outdoor surroundings, you are bound to find that perfect spot to spend a sunny afternoon.

They also have a great food menu so why not make a day of it with lunch or dinner alfresco - their Cumberland Bar Beef Burger and traditional Sunday Roast are local favourites.

The Blackbird (website) is at 37 - 39 Leven Street, Edinburgh, EH3 9LH This grand Georgian hotel, restaurant and bar is Stockbridge's go-to on a sunny day.

The Raeburn (website) is at No. 112 Raeburn Place, Edinburgh, EH4 1HG This little pub on The Grassmarket looks quite unassuming from the outside, but if you make your way through the maze of tables to the back door you’ll discover a huge garden over three levels, with room for over 200 people to bask in the sunshine under the shadow of Edinburgh Castle.

If you want to avoid a long car journey or excessive washing up, though, we’ve picked our top 10 places to get a fantastic Sunday roast in Edinburgh that will give even your mum’s handiwork a run for her money.

They’re big on their beef at Kyloe and pride themselves in serving up a posh but extremely tasty Sunday roast every week – just like your mum made it, but better (we won’t tell her if you don’t.)

It’s a fairly new addition to the Edinburgh restaurant scene, but the chefs at gastropub The OX on London Street are seasoned pros when it comes to Sunday roasts.

Here you’ll get rare roast rib of beef with all the trimmings (as well as gravy and horseradish sauce) for less than £15 a head, which has to be one of the best Sunday lunch deals the city has to offer.

This cool, quirky pub has individual roast dinner platters on offer every Sunday, with a choice of beef, chicken or mushroom stroganoff for any veggies.

A proper pub with a proper leafy beer garden, serving good grub in the elegant New Town.

A varied and loyal crowd fill the snugs of the Cumberland on a chilly day, enjoying comfort food and fine ales.

Sunnier weather brings the buzz of chatter outside, under the huge weeping willow in the garden.

A nice selection from cask and keg, both regular and guest, further verify its traditional pub credentials.

This New Town favourite can be relied upon for good food and drink in a convivial atmosphere.

The Cumberland Bar | Bars and pubs in New Town, Edinburgh

From the hanging baskets and beer garden outside to the warren of rooms inside with their simple, traditional décor (wooden tables and chairs, wood panelling) you can tell this is a highly civilised pub.

But given that the neighbourhood is one of Edinburgh’s swankiest and forms part of a World Heritage Site it’s no more than you would expect.

The beer is good with eight cask ale taps including examples from the Caledonian Brewery in Edinburgh and Fyne Ales in Argyll, there is craft keg from the likes of the Williams Brothers of Alloa, the wine list is decent for a bar – they have Laurent-Perrier Brut for those special occasions – while the food menu offers everything from sandwiches and burgers to pan-fried hake fillet or caesar salad, plus roast beef on Sundays.

Where some bars have a time of day, or year, that suits them best the Cumberland is more multifaceted.

You would be as happy here with a seat in the beer garden on a summer’s night as you might hiding away from a Scottish winter some dark January afternoon.
