Edinburgh’s latest independent coffee and sandwich emporium has opened its doors.

The graffiti-splashed snackery near the heart of the city’s Tollcross, serves up full-bodied coffee from as little as £1 and prides itself on using locally sourced breads – including herb ciabattas and bagels for its mouth-watering sarnies.

There’s even a big screen TV showing cult films whilst you wait/eat and loyalty cards offer a free coffee or cake after a handful of purchases.

Tollcrust – the coffee alchemist –  is open 8am-4pm Monday through Friday and 10am-2pm on Saturdays.

You can find Tollcrust on facebook and on twitter.

Edinburgh - REVIEW – Fredericks Coffee House, Frederick Street ...

Fredericks Coffee House is extremely new to the Edinburgh cafe scene and is a wonderful haven in which to refuel.

Located at on the first floor at 30 Frederick Street, it’s a great place to escape a shopping expedition from  nearby Princes and George Streets.

The owner, Alana Nouri has decorated this place beautifully but has also got the menu spot on.

Now open from 9am to 6pm Monday to Saturday and 10am-6pm Sunday, Fredericks is so much more than a coffee house, it serves wonderful meals starting with breakfast options such as scrambled eggs and toasted bagels with cream cheese.

You can also tuck into a bowl of home-made soup to warm yourself up, or just relax in the afternoon with coffee and cake (muffins and cupcakes available).

From the breakfast menu, through to the delicious afternoon tea, it really is a place suitable for any time of the day.

Local craft group Granny Green’s Night Out use the premises on a Monday evening as the venue is available for out of hours hire.

Fredericks has recently teamed up with the excellent Patisserie Jacob and are now serving a fantastic range of handmade cakes.

We weren’t the only one to be enjoying the cakes first thing, another customer was tucking into a full afternoon tea (£10.95) at 11am.

A full range of Jacob’s cakes will soon be on sale, with its own separate menu, making this an excellent cake destination to enjoy with friends.

The town centre has an odd dearth of good independent cafés, so recently opened Frederick’s is a very welcome addition.

Although it might take a while properly to find its feet, it’s already a great perch from which to enjoy the New Town views and have a shopping tea break.

The cheerful blue walls, jazzy chairs and bright cushions attract a young crowd, and serving some lovely Pekoe teas and Artisan Roast coffee shows a clear effort to showcasing the best of Edinburgh beverages.

A roast beef and rocket pitta with nostril-stripping Dijon is slightly let down by a deluge of oil from undrained sundried tomatoes, and the ‘house’ dressing on the smoked salmon and feta salad appears to be simple olive oil and balsamic.

Ingredients are good, however, and the broccoli and leek soup of the day is a dream.

Castello Coffee (7 Castle Street, Edinburgh) | The List

Neat and compact, this coffee lover’s bolthole delivers lovingly prepared snacks and cakes in the heart of Edinburgh’s shopping district.

Tucked away at the pedestrian end of Castle Street, Castello is a popular café with tourists, shoppers and coffee purists alike.

The interior is compact and bijou, with just enough room for a couple of tables, while the alfresco space possesses one of Edinburgh’s finest castle views.

Cakes and pastries are locally sourced, and the chocolate brownie is particularly moist and luscious.
