The Printing Press Bar & Kitchen Edinburgh

ambience

A new, 92-cover, 186 sq m bar, plus a 116-cover, 207 sq m restaurant, under the direction of chef-restaurateur Des McDonald, with a grill-brasserie feel, designed to offer maximum adaptability in order to attract day and night-time visitors with the full impact of a destination space.

Our design approach was to be highly respectful to the building’s original fabric, as well as to the late Victorian insertions, restoring grandeur and creating an environment that instantly feels long-established.

This project won the Best Restaurant or Bar in  Hotel category at the 2016 Restaurant & Bar Design Awards and won the silver award for Hospitality Interior Design at the 2016 London Design Awards.

With an updated All Day Dining menu available and a refresh to the wine options Hidden Edinburgh were kindly asked along for lunch to see what’s new at the Printing Press!

If you are not familiar The Printing Press is the food and drink offering of The Principal Edinburgh George Street (Formerly The George Hotel) on George Street.

Colin has worked at some of the country’s best restaurants including The Road Hole restaurant at The Old Course Hotel in St Andrews, Restaurant Martin Wishart in Edinburgh and the Kailyard Restaurant by Nick Nairn in Dunblane so you know you are in for a treat with this menu!

There are  a range of dining options available with the main offering being the All Day Dining menu which makes full use of Scotland’s rich larder!

The Printing Press has a firm stance on using products that are local and seasonal which is evident in the menu options.

The Printing Press, Reviews & Book - Hidden Edinburgh

The Printing Press Bar and Kitchen is located in The Principal George Street Hotel which hat was the former home of famous Scottish writer Susan Ferrier.

The restaurant and bar has a theatrical French period feel to it, while the restaurant menu has a strong focus on meat, fish and game dishes using ingredients sourced from Scotland’s larder.

The bar offers guests a wide range of cocktails and spirits and there is an extensive wine list as well as a good range of bar snacks if you are just looking for a drink and a few nibbles.

With fabulous food and genuinely lovely staff, the Printing Press is a restaurant worth tearing yourself away from your favourite novel for, finds Gaby Soutar I’m not sure if there has ever been an ACTUAL printing press at this restaurant.

In the rear dining room, where we sat on a Sunday lunchtime, there are dappled walls that, I suppose, are designed to look like the antiqued pages of a book (created with the first case of stippling I’ve seen since Changing Rooms back in 1997).

Owners Principal Hayley Hotels have transformed the tired old Tempus restaurant with the help of Des McDonald (once head chef at London celebrity haunt The Ivy, and the former CEO of Caprice Holdings, who own London’s Holborn Dining Room amongst others).

Decorated with the empty upper torso of Mr Claws, it consisted of a cappuccino cup sized puff pastry case, which was filled with chunks of seafood in a mustardy, cheesy, creamy sweet lotion of a sauce.

The additional “seafood vinaigrette” had been poured over Mr Claws’ head, which was a bit pointless, since we weren’t planning on crunching our way through his scalp.

Set in a row of townhouses with an illustrious literary heritage, The Printing Press Bar & Kitchen is located on Edinburgh’s opulent George Street and is part of the George Hotel.

Thoughtfully sourced and seasonal Scottish produce drives the menu at The Printing Press Bar & Kitchen.

The all day menu changes depending on the seasonal ingredients available but typical starters might be the smoked haddock rarebit; the house-cured salmon with mango, avocado and mustard or the chicken liver parfait on toasted brioche.

A selection grass-fed, 28-day aged Tweed valley beef steaks are cooked in a Josper for that fashionable smoky char while other main courses include North Sea cod with heritage carrots and seaweed potatoes; truffled-honey chicken with onion spelt plus craft ale-battered fish ‘n’ chips made with fish from sustainable day boats.

The Printing Press Bar & Kitchen is on George Street towards St Andrews Square, Harvey Nicks and Waverley train station.
