Urban Angel

Our cafe/bistro on Hanover Street in central Edinburgh is open every day for: breakfast & brunch, lunch, and coffee & cake (takeaway available). We love food and believe the finest, carefully sourced produce should be for everyday not just for special occasions. We can cater for most dietary requirement and offer daily vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options.

Edinburgh - REVIEW – Urban Angel, Hanover Street | Edinburgh ...

We have previously reviewed Urban Angel and eat at the Forth Street branch regularly.

The Hanover Street branch serves the same delicious food as it’s sister branch, but somehow the atmosphere is never quite the same here.

Our waiter for lunch was a warm and friendly guy (with the most amazing set of dread locks) and gave us plenty of time to browse the delicious menu and pointed out the dishes of the day we could choose, which included a very temping duck-based dish.

The food really is faultless at Urban Angel and I have pretty much had everything on the menu over the years, but the falafel sandwich really is something else.

The Hanover Street branch is down a set of stairs and over at Forth Street, there are a couple of steps up into the restaurant which would be manageable, but the bathrooms are downstairs.

The restaurant is currently only open until 5pm (although it will open for dinner throughout the festival), serving brunch, lunch and coffee and cake.

Our 10-year-old opts for scrambled eggs on granary toast (£5.50), while their dad also goes for scrambled eggs, adding the thyme Portobello mushrooms, slow-roasted tomatoes and veggie haggis (£11.70).

It looks resplendent on arrival, the pan-fried fillet perched beside vivid purple truffle potatoes with teensy turnips dotted around in the orange-coloured mojo sauce; it’s a rainbow on a plate.

Also on the menu I liked the sound of the chorizo, squid and wild rice, which is pan-fried with broad beans and broccoli, and which you can have either as a starter or small plate (£6) or main course (£11.50).

The sweet potato and quinoa salad, which also combines homemade harissa, spinach, feta cheese and coriander also sounded like a good veggie option and again is available as a starter (£5.50) or main (£10).

REVIEW: Urban Angel Edinburgh - Gluten Free & Dairy Free Cafe

We had some amazing meals out, & I would highly recommend Edinburgh for anyone on a gluten free diet, I didn’t struggle anywhere.

Whilst we were in Edinburgh, we started to form a list of places we had heard were great for those on a gluten free diet and chose a few to visit.

So of course after seeing Urban Angel so busy a few days previous, on our final day in Edinburgh, we made sure we had booked a table to ensure we got to enjoy our lunch!

, a lunch menu, cakes (always delicious gluten free options) & a specials menu each day.

From looking around Urban Angel I could see some amazing food being eaten by other people too.

food

A zen, subterranean cafe-restaurant serving seasonal, organic and ethical produce with flavours straight from heaven The sister restaurant of Urban Angel (on Forth Street) closed down earlier this summer, putting all the focus back on this original spot on Hanover Street, which turned ten this year.

The room is a very zen subterranean haven of pale pine and flagstone floors where they’ve been serving up seasonal, organic and ethical produce long before it seemed to become almost a given for any (sniff) self-respecting city centre bistro.

If your yoga classes have been guilting you into a more balanced approach to eating, Urban Angel’s smoothies mix up mango and coconut water with nutrient-loaded things like spinach, spirulina and kale for just under a fiver (there’s a raw chocolate version too, made with almond milk, cacao, banana and vanilla).

Even the treats wear a halo (the clue was always there in the café’s name), with organic plum and frangipane tart, a gluten-free orange and almond cake or fairtrade dark chocolate and nut brownie.

The good virtues continue in the superfood salads, organic lamb, pistachio and feta koftes and healthy fish dishes, but if any of this sounds like joyless, penitent eating, you’d be dead wrong - the flavours are straight from heaven.
