Henderson's Salad Table Restaurant Review | Vegan Edinburgh

Review analysis
food   menu

Henderson’s Salad Table, tucked just below ground level on Hanover Street, is a well-known name with everyone in Edinburgh.

Even though it is a vegetarian restaurant – omnivores, vegans and vegetarians alike are all well aware of its reputation.

Henderson’s Salad Table has a completely vegetarian menu, with vegan options clearly labelled.

The menu has been slightly updated since I took the pictures at my last visit, but the dishes below should give you an idea of what to expect: Hendersons Salad Table restaurant is an institution in Edinburgh, so this place is always going to be a solid bet for lunch or dinner.

Yes, the restaurant is vegetarian, but I would say around 75% of the menu is vegan or can be made vegan – so you won’t be stuck for choice.

Yeni Meze Bar has a wide selection of delicious vegan meze, all of which are very clearly marked on the menu.

Some of these dishes also appear on their early evening meal, where you can enjoy 3 mezes and a dessert for £15.50 (at the time of writing).

It’s great to see a menu so clearly marked not just for vegan needs, but a whole host of dietary requirements.

The food was absolutely delicious – there was a good number of vegan dishes peppered throughout both the hot and cold menu so Mr B and I were able to order a really varied meal full of adventurous flavours.

With a such a good varied menu, this would be the perfect place to dine with omnivore friends, as there is plenty of choice for them too.

Great service, lovely food and great value - Lynn O'rourke finds Edinburgh's Yeni Meze Bar to be her kind of place A FRIEND had been telling me about a Turkish/Middle Eastern restaurant in Edinburgh she had been to – great service, lovely food, good value.

where you can opt for Vezir Sofrasi, which is a selection of hot and cold meze for £15 per person, or Yeni Sofrasi, which is the meze selection plus three larger plates including chicken Iskender, kebabs and veggie Imam Bayildi for £20 per person – we instantly decide on the larger option.

Dana sogush is a new dish to all of us, with thin strips of marinated steak served on a fresh, slightly spicy tomato, cucumber and red onion salad, while kizartma is a winning combo of peppers and tomato topped with garlic yoghurt.

The platter of chicken Iskender (£7.95) resembles a smooth-backed hedgehog – a well-packed mound of layered chicken strips, little squares of pitta, garlic yoghurt and herby tomato sauce.

Lunch speciality sandwiches and wraps, £6.95; three meze dishes, £9.95 Dinner meze, £3.50-£5.95; specialities, £5.50-£13.95; banquet meals (minimum two people) selection of meze, £15 (pp); selection of meze plus Iskender and kebabs, £20 (pp) Puddings £2.25-£4.95 ALSO ON THE MENU You can, of course, skip the meze and go straight to the main courses, which as well as traditional meat dishes also have a decent offering of veg and fish-based options.

Turkish cuisine is big on hands-on social dining and, like Mediterranean countries such as Italy and Spain, fresh, local ingredients – spices, fruits, meat and vegetables – are used in mouth- watering combinations, often to be shared across the table.

Rendezvous@Nargile sources many of its ingredients from Turkey and at John’s request, we opted for a couple of meze starters and each of the dishes showcased the restaurant’s lavish larder at its best.

Meze are smaller in quantity, but large in the selection on offer, which allowed us to dip in and out of various dishes, sploshing and dabbing with strips of fresh, warm pitta straight from the oven.

We devoured them all – lamb with tarragon, hummus in olive oil, prawns in coriander and chilli, aubergine with tomato and onion, cracked wheat salad, filo with spinach and feta, Turkish sausage, calamari and grilled halloumi.

The chicken was done in tomato and garlic, with a sprinkling of tarragon and the meat feast was completed with spicy sucuk, the Turkish sausage that had also found favour in the meze.

From the whitewashed walls which are covered in various different Mediterranean holiday resort posters, to the euro-pop gently playing in the background, it really didn’t feel like Edinburgh and it was gently soothing to escape the cold, dreich Edinburgh weather.

The hummus was delicious but if I had one small complaint was that some of the pitta bread was cold whilst the rest was hot.

There wasn’t enough of it for us and we were about fighting for the last bit and were very close to ordering another portion when the next lot of food appeared.

We both felt incredibly guilty at not being able to finish everything (we did finish the hummus and sausage), especially when we seen the waiters face and had to explain repeatedly that we loved the food but we were full.

A meal for 2 with 2 soft drinks was £42 which given the portion size was extremely reasonable and I would absolutely recommend this restaurant.
