The Dining Room is open 12 hours a day, seven days a week and, presumably, the owners have factored in all that time for customers to negotiate their entrance and exit through the temporary barriers and speed bumps.

But it’s now much more about food - casual cuisine, family friendly, with a bistro menu that plays to the greatest hits of that style of dining.

Admittedly, it was a surprise to even find the gents in the first place given the dark colours dominating the main dining room, although the other eating areas are much less gloomy.

It wasn’t lip-smackingly memorable, but my main course of mash with pork and leek sausages definitely raised the bar.

Alan, meanwhile, was savouring his ghoulash of slow braised beef with basmati rice and reckoned if the red onions in the starter were fairly tasteless, the contrast with the depth of flavours in his main course was considerable.
