Edinburgh restaurants and pubs: 1780 - The Skinny

1780, formerly Bad Ass Bistro, is well worth a visit, whether you're partaking in the infamous Rose Street pub crawl or just looking for a little respite from the throngs of tourists over on Princes Street.

The pub is small – booking is recommended – and the walls are busily adorned with photographs, paintings and mirrors.

The menu is pretty standard pub grub, with a nod to Scottish specialities and seafood.

Perched at the top of the Royal Mile, the Ensign Ewart is the closest pub to Edinburgh Castle and a perfect starting point for any pub crawl.

The pub has a great selection of real ales and you won’t be able to drink here without learning of the story behind its namesake: an 18th century local character who lived a respectable life by day but was a thief by night, who was eventually caught and hanged.

As you leave Edinburgh’s Old Town (don’t worry, we’ll be returning later) and head towards the stately New Town, why not stop off at The Wash Bar, an unpretentious little pub that overlooks Princes Street Gardens and the Scottish National Gallery?

Scott’s marks the halfway point of our capital pub crawl.

Something of an Edinburgh institution in the West End, Scott’s is named after ‘Ma Scott’, the fiery publican who owned the bar in the 19th century.

We take a trip down one of the capital city's most popular pub crawl routes Edinburgh’s Rose Street is a popular destination for pub crawls.

The bars that inhabit Rose Street have remained pillars of pubcrawl and Edinburgh history for many years, each forming part of the city's rich past.

Rose Street Brewery has an ‘open-out’ front which makes the bar part of the street, meaning you can enjoy a bit of fresh air and the glorious Edinburgh streets while you make a quick stop off.

A short walk from Rose Street (west down Thistle Street, crossing Castle Street) lies The Oxford Bar.

Also a short but rewarding walk from Rose Street is The Cafe Royal, known as a “Golden Age” traditional pub not least for its interiors.

This was our first visit originally recommended by a friend, we were certainly not disappointed with comfortable booth seating, friendly staff, good food and choice of drinks and cocktails, great venue to relax and catch up with friends, we were there for several hours so great to find a place where we were not rushed out the door after couple hours Which could happen in other restaurants... well done Grand Cru we will be back 🥂🍾🍽 😀 Nice, friendly staff.

We had a great night and will defiantly be returning had a great time at Grand Cru, we reserved a table for drinks and the staff serving were very good, polite and swift.

The waitress was fantastic, food really good and drinks great.

Would definitely go back to Grand Cru as been twice now and both times a great time had plus prices are really good Lovely food, very reasonably priced but didn't have our booking and it was fully booked, except some cancellation for table of 4 enabled us have a table thankfully.

Food is good and service is quick.

Named after the Caledonian Brewery down the road, it now reserves just one pump for Caley beer – Deuchars IPA – but stocks several guest ales and speciality beers, plus 24 wines by the glass and the same number of whiskies.

Open Mon-Thurs noon-midnight, Fri noon-1am, Sat 11am-1am, Sun 11am-midnight A wide hollow in the shadow of Edinburgh Castle, the Grassmarket used to be the scene of regular public hangings, but is now one of Edinburgh's busiest drinking areas.

Open Mon-Thurs 11am-11pm, Fri, Sat 11am-midnight,Sun 12.30pm-11pm Half a mile from Edinburgh's controversial Scottish Parliament building is this smart, atmospheric bar serving probably the best pub burgers in the city.

Open Mon-Thurs, Sun 10am-midnight, Fri, Sat 10am-1am Between Leith's shore area and the top of Leith Walk in the city centre are four fantastic bars owned by a friendly Swedish couple: Sofi's, Boda Bar, Victoria and Joseph Pearce.

It serves beautifully presented food, has high ceilings and huge windows that bathe the bar in light, and a large outdoor area where you can sit in the sun and people-watch.
