6 of the best real ale pubs in Edinburgh - Scotsman Food and Drink

Should you be looking to find somewhere to enjoy real ale in Edinburgh we have created this handy guide to some of the best pubs in which to enjoy some amazing cask ales from some of Scotland’s (and the rest of the UK’s) best breweries: A wonderful traditional pub situated on the city’s lively Rose Street, the Abbotsford has it all; a great interior (including a wonderful Jacobean-style ceiling), a stunning collection of real ales, whisky and spirits and luscious amounts of delicious food.

Like an Aladdin’s cave of spirits, ales and Scottish cuisine, the Abbotsford doesn’t look like much from the outside but inside, you are greeted by a mahogany island bar with welcoming staff and several real ale taps with beers on rotation, many of which are local staples.

Overlooking the water at The Shore in Leith, M & H is a regular in the CAMRA Good Beer Guide and offers no less than eight real ales on tap at any one time as well a plentiful amount of whisky and interestingly, cask conditioned cider (not for the faint of heart).

Situated in the historic Port ‘o Leith, you’ll find the exciting Roseleaf bar and cafe, already featured on our cocktail bars guide, this excellent little pub also offers an extensive selection of real ales, mainly bottled (though there are two taps, one resident and one guest).

A real ale pub in the truest sense, the Bow bar focuses on doing the simple things well, namely serving great beer and offering a wondrous amount of whisky.

We take a trip down one of the capital city's most popular pub crawl routes Edinburgh’s Rose Street is a popular destination for pub crawls.

The bars that inhabit Rose Street have remained pillars of pubcrawl and Edinburgh history for many years, each forming part of the city's rich past.

Rose Street Brewery has an ‘open-out’ front which makes the bar part of the street, meaning you can enjoy a bit of fresh air and the glorious Edinburgh streets while you make a quick stop off.

A short walk from Rose Street (west down Thistle Street, crossing Castle Street) lies The Oxford Bar.

Also a short but rewarding walk from Rose Street is The Cafe Royal, known as a “Golden Age” traditional pub not least for its interiors.

The Mussel Inn is always changing the variety seafood on offer, making sure that each dish is as fresh and innovative as possible.

And you will not be disappointed by the hot seafood platter: king and queen scallops, tiger prawns and mussels poached in seafood sauce topped with grilled sea bass fillet and crème fraiche.

With a fantastic selection of Scottish steak and seafood, alongside excellent wines, artisan beers and ciders, Wildfire is a crowd-pleaser.

There is an excellent selection of ramen, sushi and yakitori, and the sashimi is so fresh it melts in the mouth.

There is a good selection of beers on tap and free ales, and the Scottish-based menu is a good bet for dinner.

The 85-room, mid-range Old Waverley Hotel is superbly located on Edinburgh’s most famous shopping street, convenient for both business travelers and tourists.

Set in a 19th-century building, the hotel maintains an ultra-Scottish and fairly conservative style, with vast expanses of tartan carpeting in the lobby and up the main staircase.

Some guests complain reception can only be reached past this flight of stairs.

Many of the hotel's windows offer views of Edinburgh’s top sites, including the Castle and Scott Monument.

Guests seeking a more modern boutique property in New Town could try The Place.
