Stick with steak at Edinburgh's Gaucho or you might be disappointed, says Gaby Soutar I need to invest in some night vision goggles.

This featured three petite helpings, and we all liked our bites of limey tuna ceviche, with cola-cube coloured pieces of fish and a bolster of creamy guacamole, while the soft shell crab causita featured a couple of tempura battered limbs, a dollop of smoked paprika mayonnaise, parsley vinaigrette and, on the side, a stub of what tasted and looked a lot like cold mashed potato.

When it came to mains, I wish one of us had tried their steak, but some bad ordering meant the closest we got was the lomo a la Milanese (£19.95).

Well, apart from the half lemon that came with my option, which featured two insole-sized pieces of dry and fibrous “tenderised fillet steak”.

Our grilled swordfish steak (£21.95) was OK, though a little grey and overdone, and came with a pleasant crushed and smoked chickpea mixture, as well as a pointless pyre of chopped raw red onion.

Opens today: Fazenda, George Street, Edinburgh | Foodie Explorers

We were invited along to the soft opening of South American restaurant, Fazenda Bar & Grill on Edinburgh’s George Street and left, not only with full bellies, but with high hopes for the latest restaurant to open in Edinburgh.

To start the Fazenda experience we visit the sides bar.

You could really spend the whole evening here as there’s a huge selection of food on offer from salads to cheese, cured meats, fish and more.

Meat really is the star of the show at Fazenda, but it isn’t the only tasty thing on offer.

The food at Fazenda was impressive, with a variety of moist and tender meats served until you can handle no more – that’s what you call a first world problem!

A sight for the senses at Gaucho Edinburgh

A sight for the senses at Gaucho Edinburgh Jo Morris deliberates the importance of provenance at Gaucho.

The latest addition to the St Andrews Square restaurant collective is Gaucho, a luxury steak restaurant specialising in Argentine beef.

Purveyors of the Gaucho restaurants in London will already know how seriously they take the business of delivering top quality Argentine steak and the quality of the steak delivered to your plate here is exceptional.

The beef was fantastic- with a ‘cooked on a gaucho’s grill in Buenos Aires’ flavour and finish that is hard to replicate, even with the much touted Josper used by other establishments.

Gaucho packs a punch.
