Edinburgh's The Ivy on the Square has both style and substance, says Gaby Soutar Did anyone ever tune in to Channel 5’s daytime telly fave The Restaurant Inspector?

Edinburgh’s new Ivy on the Square is unashamedly maximalist – in homage, one supposes, to the original 100-year-old celebrity haunt in London – with Art-Deco-esque prints all over the walls and banquettes heaped with velvety cushions.

Served on an ivy-leaf monogrammed plate, the starter of duck liver parfait (£6.95) was a goodie, with a butter-clad puck of meaty putty, and a topping of crumbled hazelnuts, black truffle shavings, and pear and ginger compote.

Anyway, my other half loved its interior of mushroom, pheasant, wild boar and venison, oak-leaf-hued crust and sides of smooth mash, carrot struts and a truffle (more truffle!)

We also had the vanilla-dusted Scottish burnt cream (£6.50), aka crème brûlée – a huge portion (enough to magnolia wash an eatery on The Restaurant Inspector), with a snappy shortbread plank on top.

Teething troubles can’t eclipse star attractions of taste and ambience at the newly opened restaurant, writes Kirsty McLuckie I wasn’t invited to the grand opening of the Ivy on the Square in Edinburgh.

At the height of its exclusiveness, the ability to phone the maitre d’ at the original Ivy and get a table immediately was a mark of serious celeb clout.

• READ MORE:  Liam Rudden: Viewing The Ivy on the Square from Table 20 There were certainly a few glamorous diners – we even spotted a sequinned evening gown – so my companion Lizzie was relieved that she’d changed out of her ripped jeans into something more chic for the occasion.

• READ MORE: Take a closer look at The Ivy on the Square’s whisky trolley My Bellini (£8.25) was fairly standard, but Lizzie’s Holyrood Spritz (£6.50) was a deliciously refreshing mix of Earl Grey gin, citrus oleo-saccharum and Cocchi Americano – specialist ingredients which elevated it beyond anything you could shake up at home.

We were served by a waitress who was charming, witty and attentive, but while much is good enough to recommend the Ivy on the Square for a special occasion, the bar service on the night we visited was a let down.
