Phuket Pavilion, located just opposite The Playhouse on the edge of Edinburgh’s New Town, is a firm local favourite for great Thai food.

The place was full of families and couples, celebrating birthdays, having a special pre-theatre dinner, or simply enjoying a weekend meal out – the place had an absolutely buzzing atmosphere and Mr B and I couldn’t wait to try their vegan offering.

Unfortunately, there’s a little bit of confusion around what dishes are actually vegan at Phuket Pavilion.

The mushroom stir fry was done in a lovely sweet sauce that went perfectly with a bowl of sticky rice, while Mr B said the Pad Thai was one of the best he’s ever tasted.

The folks at Phuket Pavilion are clearly really good at rustling up at decent Thai food, and this would be an excellent place to bring your omnivore friends for a good slap-up meal.

For starters we ordered chicken satay, Goong Tod Tempura and steamed king scallops.

I’m not a huge scallop fan as I find them a little too fishy for my liking but both Mr Edinburgh and Snr Mr Edinburger thoroughly enjoyed them.

This had squid, king prawns and chicken in it and this was a great choice.

Mr Edinburger’s Dad had Chu Chu Lamb.

Phuket Pavilion is a fantastic Thai and we would probably go as far as to say it is one of the best we’ve had so far in Edinburgh.

If you’re looking for a great Thai restaurant, Edinburgh is packed full of choice, from relaxed café-style environments to those with more of a fine dining feel - to make your choice easier, we’ve shared our favourites below.

Seafood fans will love the tender soft shell crab in a yellow curry sauce infused with plenty of turmeric, and we love the sirloin steak grilled Thai-style, with a fiery garlic, chilli, pepper and Thai basil sauce.

We often order the massaman lamb curry: tender chunks of lamb in a rich and warming sauce packed full of coconut milk, potatoes and cashew nuts, and the lime and lemongrass sorbet is a lovely refreshing palate cleanser to end the meal.

The vegetarian spring rolls are full of flavour without being greasy, and their take on the famous Som Tum Thai salad of shredded vegetables, cashews and chillies is fresh and fiery.

For something new, try the Kua Kling: a southern Thai chicken dish packed full of spices and fragrant Kaffir lime leaves.

If you’re enjoying his pre-theatre menu before heading across the road to the Playhouse you might not have time to spare, but the kitchen’s consistent quality and the reassuringly recognisable Thai décor – ornate down to the cutlery, the tank of brightly coloured fish and the delicately carved carrot garnish – should go a long way to calming you down.

The Pavilion has a large menu that features all the favourites: a subtle satay chicken, beautiful massaman curries and a whole steamed sea bass, simply and ideally steamed with ginger and soy.

This house special of Scottish sirloin is char-grilled to your preference, cocking a cheeky Scottish wink at a rich Thai whisky sauce.

It doesn’t offer the tropical sunshine or golden sands of Thailand’s popular southern playground, but Edinburgh’s Phuket Pavilion offers a hefty dose of its Asian tastes and flavours.

Handily situated opposite the Edinburgh Playhouse theatre and Vue cinema - and set just around the corner from Broughton Street’s fine array of drinking dens - the clientele here is a steady stream of culture vultures, pre-night outers and locals in search of some tasty scran.

All the usual suspects are here: a sticky pad thai, a rich red or green curry, a moreish massaman.

But it’s the seafood and duck specialities that really sing, with the Phuket Jaan Roen (a juicy mix of king prawns, mussels and squid with sweet basil and chili) and Chu Chi Ped (duck breast topped with red curry sauce) proving particularly memorable.

A decent wine list and attentive service round things off nicely.
