Towards the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th in Edinburgh, there was a surge in beautifully designed pubs built all over the city.

Completed in 1896, on the site of a tenement which previously housed The Guildford Arms Hotel, it proudly boasts that it has been run by the Stewart family ever since.

The pub frontage is grand and imposing, consisting of large, arched frosted glass windows windows bearing the Guildford Arms logo.

Alongside the family whisky business, D&J McCallum Ltd, they run a number of public houses including The Canon's Gait, The Abbotsford Bar & Restaurant, The Cumberland Bar and of course their first: The Guildford Arms.

Drink: Great range on offer but beer is the main attraction here with, with a constantly changing range of cask and craft ales as well as a great selection on tap and in bottles.

One of Edinburgh’s most beautiful old bars, which quietly delivers a quality pint and a decent plate of pub grub too.

First up, it's beautiful – everything you’ve heard about the ceiling, the gleaming dark wood and the brass that twinkles in the gentle Edinburgh light is true.

Perhaps the fact that the Guildford’s social media pages feature picture after picture of its guest ales, rather than its gleaming gantry, is the key to its success.

Beer is a serious business here, with a continuously changing range of cask and craft ales and beers gracing the taps.

And while there are some familiar faces, there’s always something new to discover – whether it’s a new brewer or a single cask of something special.

Busy and friendly with spectacular Victorian décor, a marvellous range of real ales and good food The splendid Victorian décor is the chief glory here.

Opulently excessive, this features ornate painted plasterwork on lofty ceiling, dark mahogany fittings, heavy swagged velvet curtains and a busy patterned carpet.

Tables and stools are lined up along towering arched windows opposite the bar, where knowledgeable, efficient staff might offer a taste of the ten, quickly changing ales before you choose what you want; beers come from breweries such as Belhaven, Fallen, Fyne Ales, Oakham, Orkney, Mordue, Speyside Craft, Stewart, Swannay and Wells.

The snug upstairs gallery restaurant, with contrasting modern décor, gives a fine dress-circle view of the main bar.

The Guildford Arms is best known for its superb range of traditional ales and whiskies, and is very popular for lunch and dinner.

The lunch menu is packed with traditional pub favourites, such as breaded haddock, homemade burgers, Crombie’s sausage served with creamy mash, and the fantastic Aberdeen Angus and Dark Island pie.

Also popular are the Shetland mussels in creamy garlic sauce, and haggis-stuffed chicken breast with black pepper and whisky sauce.

Meat-lovers won’t be able to resist the chargrilled range, which includes 21-day-hung Aberdeen Angus sirloin and rib-eye, as well as the picanha steak served traditionally with mushrooms, tomatoes and garlic butter.

A fantastic selection of keenly priced wine along with traditional ales and craft beers can be matched to the dishes – just ask the knowledgeable staff for advice.
