As you may recall, The Voodoo Rooms is one of our favourite bars and music venues in the city.
I don’t know whether it was the snowy weather or the time of day (around 2pm on a Saturday), but the Voodoo Rooms was very quiet when we arrived.
Rather unimaginatively, we had both opted for the same item – the Voodoo Beef Burger with hand-cut fries – despite a varied and reasonably-priced menu.
The food took a little on the long side to arrive, but when it did we could appreciate why.
Portions and time left no room for dessert, but after this brief visit we promised we would return to sample some more devilish treats from the Voodoo’s kitchens.

One of Edinburgh’s sleekest style bars, The Voodoo Rooms bar is located above the Café Royal.
The interior is dominated by a long black leather-studded bar and guests sip quality cocktails (like the rather decadent Tip of the Hat, a blend of Tanqueray 10 Gin, hot ginger syrup and absinthe diluted with fennel tea ice cubes) in semi-circular booths.
The space is compact, but richly and evocatively decorated with an intricate ceiling painted in shades of black and gold.
Service is efficient and friendly and the atmosphere is determinedly upmarket and the five room space regularly plays host to special events, gigs and parties.
They aim to provide an eclectic and exotic range of live music, cabaret, clubs, events, gatherings, happenings, exhibitions & screenings so diverse and electrifying that it won’t just be their fine drinks, dining and lounging that will draw you back.

The stunning dining room area comes adorned with ornate ceilings, huge arched windows and plush booth seating.
The Voodoo Rooms is famous for its huge choice of tequila and rum.
There’s a dazzling choice of cocktails, and a largely Scottish range of beers.
With private rooms coming equipped with WiFi, projector screens, stages and plenty of room to dance long into the night, The venue is an obvious choice for a special occasion in the heart of the city.

On paper some might say black leather, gold and mirrored surfaces are not the most obvious of bedfellows for a 19th-century period property.
The main bar is the heart of the operation, which also includes live music, fringe and event spaces.
The menu is competitively priced and delivers good quality bistro staples in an intimate, and slightly Gothic, dining room.
Smoked venison with goat's cheese and cucumber salad; plump scallops with iron-rich black pudding and chorizo sit among the starters.
There are few surprises on this solid menu, but everything is executed with confidence, leaving the more experimental activities to the other side of the bar.
