The Conan Doyle Pub renamed The JK Rowling - Edinburgh City of ...

As of the 1 of January this year, The The Conan Doyle Pub on York Place has been changed, for now, to The J.K Rowling.

The renaming of the pub is only temporary (for fans of Sherlock) and is part of a fascinating and immersive new visual art installation and event taking place in Edinburgh throughout January.

Organised and run by Edinburgh’s Hogmanay, Message from the Skies is a collaboration between crime writer Val McDermid, theatre director Philip Howard, and Double Take projections.

Message from the Skies lets you explore literary Edinburgh in a new light, as it showcases the streets and buildings that have inspired some of the city’s authors, including the likes of Susan Ferrier, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Robert Louis Stevenson, J.K. Rowling and Muriel Spark.

Featuring a myriad of light projections, art and sound installations, the trail moves from location to location, following Val McDermid’s story, ‘New Year’s Resurrection’.

Now, this relationship is going to become even more magical with a pop-up potions bar.

Local events company the Pop Up Geeks have teased would-be wizards with their latest project on social media, revealing that the ‘Perilous Potions’ bar will be opening next year, inspired by the works of JK Rowling.

Previous events have included ‘Blood and Wine’, a Game of Thrones themed bar, as well as ‘The Upside Down’, based on the Netflix series Stranger Things, with a Rick and Morty bar also coming up in the future.

The company’s Instagram posts suggest that cocktails may include their own take on the Hogsmeade classic Butterbeer, as well as other potion inspired drinks.

As an interactive experience, guests will likely be able to conjure their own creations, as if in a potion class at Hogwarts.

J.K. Rowling gets her own (temporary) pub in Edinburgh

There’s something about the coziness of pubs—and let’s face it, the inspiration that comes from alcohol—that makes these establishments into homes away from home for various eventually successful writers.

Sherlock Holmes scribe Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, for example, shared his most famous creation’s love of the drink, so the fact that a legendary Edinburgh pub boasts the author’s name is not much of a surprise.

But now the The Conan Doyle on York Place is about to get a month-long facelift in honor of another Scottish writer: J.K. Rowling.

As Harry Potter author Rowling “wrote her best-selling series about a powerful boy wizard at The Elephant House, located around a mile from the pub, The Conan Doyle is getting a new sign for January, proclaiming it The J.K. Rowling: While some locals are protesting the change, they only need to hang in there until January 25, when The Conan Doyle will get its original name back.

No word on whether The J.K. Rowling will feature butter beer or any other Leaky Cauldron delights in the meantime.

Edinburgh's Conan Doyle pub is rebranded the JK Rowling ...

IN a mystery befitting his greatest character, the pub named after Sherlock Holmes writer Sir Arthur Conan Doyle has been dramatically renamed.

Drinkers in the popular Conan Doyle pub, on the edge of Edinburgh’s New Town, were astonished to find it magically re-branded - as the JK Rowling.

Owners Nicholson’s Pubs were staying tight-lipped on Sunday - but it is understood the swift moniker change is an elaborate stunt for Hogmanay.

Lucy Barker tweeted: “Hello @Nicholsonspubs, why has the Conan Doyle pub been renamed the @jk_rowling?”

The pub was named after the great Scots storyteller Sir Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle who was born in nearby Picardy Place in 1859.

Edinburgh Pub Named After Sir Arthur Conan Doyle Rebranded As ...

In a mystery worthy of a ‘Sherlock Holmes’ story, a pub named after writer Sir Arthur Conan Doyle has magically rebranded to become The JK Rowling.

The Conan Doyle pub, in Edinburgh, converted into a mecca for ‘Harry Potter’ fans during Hogmanay - the Scottish New Year’s celebration.

However, critics will be pleased to hear the pub’s new look is a “temporary transformation”, created as part of a literary festival aimed at championing women writers.

Oh dear me, no.... Fan of @jk_rowling but There is No Need for this abomination 😉 — Elaine Downs (@ElaineDowns1) December 31, 2017 Thats it boycotted for my family then — Caledonia ğŸ´ó §ó ¢ó ³ó £ó ´ó ¿ (@_caledonia) December 31, 2017 Sad to see the good old Edinburgh traditional pubs becoming soulless corporate products — A.D'Angelo (@dangeloalex) January 1, 2018 Although some on Twitter guessed the name change was a publicity stunt, owners Nicholson’s Pubs refused to lift the lid on the mystery until the new year.

The pub appears in a story written by author Val McDermid as part of the festival, which champions female writers.
