TartanSpoon - A Review of Twenty Princes Street, Edinburgh

The space is large and open with high ceilings and beautiful triple height bay windows looking out over the cityscape showing off stunning panoramic views over Princes Street, the Old Town and all the way up towards the Castle.

For mains you can choose from some of the best Scottish produce such as the Perthshire Venison with potato fondant and scorched pear (£19); or the North Sea Cod with langoustine bisque (£17.50) but we choose the Whole Scottish Lobster (£42) and the T-Bone steak cooked on their Josper Charcoal Grill (£34).

I decided to order their most popular dish which was the ‘Fire and Ice’ Bannoffee Baked Alaska (£6.50) and Mr TS the Pistachio and Rape Seed Oil Cake (£5.50).

Watch the flaming spectacle here The Pistachio and Rape Seed Oil Cake was a pretty little dish with the pear tender but firm and sweet.

It is a great restaurant and I am so glad that I have been, as it definitely stands up there with the best restaurants in Edinburgh serving up the best of Scottish surf and turf!

20 Princes Street Restaurant Review - The Luxury Editor

20 Princes Street might be relatively young in age – launching in just 2013, but in its few years of existence it has built up an extremely positive reputation within the Edinburgh food and drink scene, mention it’s name is and it is always met with nods of approval, having yet to experience the restaurant ourselves TLE went along last Friday night to find out what all the fuss is about.

Mixing old with new the restaurant retains the building’s original Victorian features – triple high ceilings, wooden cornicing and gigantic bay windows whisk you back to a bygone era, whilst the contemporary finishes like walnut booths  and white marble tables sit in complete harmony within the space.

The restaurant was buzzing and alive with chatter and laughter when we were in – with customers enjoying pre-dinner drinks in the restaurants adjoining gin bar Juniper and all tables in the main dining area full.

Now the one surprising thing about the wine menu is that it is incredibly good value – given the quality and finish of the restaurant I was not expecting bottles starting from £17.50 a bargain!

Having a cocktail bar attached to the restaurant which you can visit for a drink (you don’t need to be dining), means they have a vast array of cocktails on offer and since the restaurant doesn’t take it self too seriously – cocktails are split into areas of Edinburgh – Opt for a Moet and Chandon champagne with watermelon and mint ice from the Royal Mile collection.

The dining room at Twenty Princes Street The menu at Twenty Princes Street has lots to choose from but without being an exhausting read.

Ayrshire Pig Cheek As you know, I love black pudding and haggis, so the Buccleuch black pudding and haggis French toast was the only option for me.

The spicy haggis and black pudding provided the perfect moist centre to the golden toast.

With bay windows offering striking views out to Princes Street Gardens and the Old Town, this venue is a lot more than just a pretty face.

Much is made of the Josper charcoal grill and sure enough, a medium-rare sirloin arrives perfectly prepared, together with a deep, rich sauce and some stonking chips.

No little thought has gone into the wine selection and there’s an eye-wateringly long list of cocktails and spirits sourced from the snazzy Juniper bar a few yards away.

The interiors are an exciting melange of smouldering black leather and burnished gold upholstery, with sleek lacquered accents set against a striking backdrop of white and gold.

There’s an exciting choice of fish and seafood dishes while the selection of steaks are a signature of the restaurant with a Josper Grill ensuring dishes are delivered perfectly.

On the eve of the Italy v Scotland Six Nations rugby international dad led early celebrations by ordering haggis ravioli with roast swede, chicken butter, warm Drambuie jelly and crisp potato (£5.50).

We were back in the West End with my “crab sandwich” – dressed Scottish white crab on toasted malt bread, brown crab butter & crab tea (£7.50) which was presented like something from Alice In Wonderland.

The salty broth was poured from an oriental teapot into a dinky glass teacup while I spread the quenelle of smooth brown butter on to a slice of miniature loaf and sprinkled the white crab on top.

“Fish without the faff” was how father described his elegant salt & rosemary-baked seabass with black pepper and dill crushed potatoes & brown shrimp butter (£17) which was released from its parchment sarcophagus and expertly skinned at the table by our waitress.

Starting at £20 per person for treats including a selection of teas and coffees, there is also a £26 per person menu which features a glass of chilled Moët & Chandon champagne or pick one of Juniper’s classic cocktails.
