Thai restaurant chain  Chaophraya is known for being stylish, contemporary and just a little bit opulent.

Having recently undergone a bit of a rebrand with a new logo and new menus which encourage you to take a culinary journey around Thailand, Chaophraya invited me along to their Edinburgh restaurant to try out some of the new dishes for myself.

Both Lauren and I chose the sirloin steak with panang sauce whilst Laura and Louise went for the duck tamarind, all accompanied by coconut rice.

As I have mentioned before, I usually try to avoid chain restaurants as I often find them disappointing, but – apart from the starter – I thought Chaophraya did very well with good food, service and cocktails.

Chaophraya offers a more contemporary take on Thai dining, so you can expect modernised versions of traditional dishes and a dessert menu to suit British diners.

Aizle (107–109 St Leonard's Street, Edinburgh) | The List

The 2017/18 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+ ).

Aizle, which rhymes with hazel and is old Scots for a spark or ember, is seriously seasonal with its monthly ‘harvest’ of produce plucked, foraged and slaughtered.

From this comes a dazzling list of perhaps 20 ingredients, some of which you’ve probably never heard of.

The bar is set high by a trio of sophisticated treats to start with.

Expect something indulgent and chocolaty for pudding and a well-conceived, if pricey, wine list, spruced up with some homemade soft drinks and a bevy of inventive, seasonal cocktails.

drinks

This tapas joint and bar brings a bit of Spanish life to Dalston.

Dishes range from patatas bravas, huevos rotos, platters of iberico jamon and plates of Spanish cheese to gambas al pil-pil, red peppers stuffed with cod and served with piquillo sauce and pulpo a la gallega - Galicia's signature dish of octopus with paprika, olive oil and rock salt.

Sangria is available too, as well as kalimotxo - a Spanish favourite of red wine mixed with cola.
