Halloween seems an appropriate night to say ‘Hola’ to Diablo Loco, a new Mexican bar and restaurant in Edinburgh.

By now, you’re probably getting the idea that Diablo Loco is perhaps not the best place to take an elderly aunt before catching a string quartet recital at the nearby Queen’s Hall.

However, Diablo Loco dishes such as the pulled chilli jackfruit taco with avocado mojo, pickled onion and fresh coriander sounds rather more intriguing than a bowl of buzzard’s breath chilli.

Not that many people will be paying too much attention after the third spin of the tequila wheel of (mis)fortune.

On Thursday 2nd November, Diablo Loco is holding a Day of the Dead launch party.

The third day of the Day of the Dead Festival that we have all come to love here in the UK, where we’ve adopted this Mexican tradition and culture and celebrate with marigolds, bright flowers, sugar skulls and a lot of food and drink.

The bar is the most striking, decorated with bright flowers, plenty of skull paraphernalia and lots of tequila line the shelves.

Crispy Mexican pork puffs, guacamole, pomegranate and sheep’s milk cheese.

They also have gluten free, vegan and vegetarian options such as the Naked Burrito which is caramelised sweet potato with pulled chilli jackfruit, corn salsa, fiery slaw, green rice, pomegranate and avocado.

As its a Mexican Bar we couldn’t leave without sampling their something from their drinks menu.

While, pork belly croquettes (£6.50) were four cress-strewn and mouse-coloured bollards of dense hot shredded meat, glued to a board with mayo and studded with more red fruit seeds.

We’d also ordered a pair of Yucatan-style chicken tacos (£6.50 for two), which contained charred poultry, white hot baby-tooth-sized pineapple chunks, some watery salsa, mayo and cress.

Its bland and bulky selection of contents included rather ordinary “smoky chipotle chicken tinga” bits, a “fiery slaw” that was about as hot as an igloo’s outhouse, and a watery salsa verde.

We were also a bit deflated by the other tacos, especially since the chicken version we’d already had as a starter had been promising.

Each of the baja fish (£5 for two) numbers featured a crispy battered piece of cod, which was fine, but dull overall since there was little else in the tortilla, apart from a smudge of guacamole and some mayo.

Having launched on Dia de Muertos, Bar Mexicana Diablo Loco is set to offer the capital's residents a "true taste of Mexico" in Edinburgh’s South Side.

Spanish for Crazy Devil, Diablo Loco can be found on South Clerk Street, and will offer a diverse drinks offering and complimentary food menu, both rich in authentic Mexican flavours.

The team behind Diablo Loco says the bar’s drink offering will focus on a myriad of tequilas and mezcals, showcased in an eclectic selection of Margaritas, from Smoked Paprika to Pineapple and Cardomon, as well as staples of any self-respecting Mexican cocktail repertoire, such as the Tommie’s Margarita and a classic El Diablo.

Stuart Shearer, general manager of Diablo Loco, said: “We are thrilled to be bringing a taste of Mexico to Edinburgh’s South Side, especially on Mexico’s annual celebration, Dia de Muertos.

Further to the food and drink offering, the team say there will be a range of Mexican-inspired entertainment throughout the week and weekend, announced via the Diablo Loco website.

Review: Diablo Loco

Formally known as Clerk's Bar, the new Mexican bar and eatery  Diablo Loco opened up only a few weeks ago on South Clerk street, Edinburgh.

Their menu is a solid lineup of traditional Latin American dishes, including Baja fish tacos and chipotle glazed pork belly, while the drinks menu offers such delights as Pineapple & Cardamon margaritas and the El Craig Davide shot.

My favourite part of the meal was the Baja fish tacos with pea mole, cabbage, pickled jalapeno & lime mayo.

Overall I could definitely be tempted back to Diablo Loco with the promise of a plateful of fish tacos, and I might just have to round the meal off by sampling the ice-cream waffle taco I was eyeing up.

In the end, I decided on the Naked Burrito which came with caramelised sweet potato, pulled chilli jackfruit, corn salsa, fiery slaw, green rice, pomegranate and avocado.
