The Devil's Advocate, Advocate's Close, Edinburgh | Chris Stewart ...

Located in the heart of Chris Stewart Group’s award-winning Advocate’s Close development, The Devil’s Advocate opened its doors in 2013 and has become a very popular, well known – and well-hidden – addition to the Edinburgh food and drink scene.

The bar occupies the former pump house of the Evening News print rooms and much of the original character of the building has been maintained – the remnants of former staircases have been exposed and timber beams have been reclaimed and used for the bar and table tops.

Shortlisted for the 2015 GQ Bar of the Year award, The Devil’s Advocate bar holds an eclectic collection of Scottish and world whiskies and the multiple award winning bartenders also serve inventive seasonal cocktails, a considered wine list and selected craft beers.

In addition, the kitchen team consistently create lunch and dinner menus that hold true to the quality, seasonal Scottish produce whilst providing a modern dining experience.

The long cold, nights are drawing in as winter begins to take grip, here are five of the cosiest restaurants in Edinburgh to take refuge in.

To combat the cold, we’ve picked out 5 of the cosiest restaurants in Edinburgh to take shelter in this winter.

Home to one of our favourite chefs in the city, l’escargot brings a little Gallic flair to Broughton Street with a menu that’s designed to showcase the very best in Scottish ingredients from Barra snails to Orkney beef.

Talk about pedigree, the Scran and Scallie is the brainchild of two of the city’s most experienced chefs, Tom Kitchin and Dominic Jack, and is the perfect place to unwind on a cold winter’s day with delightful ‘scran’ – Scottish pub grub.

With a view that looks out onto the Shore waterline, it’s one of the cosiest places on this list – perfect for whiling away the afternoon or evening – with a small fire to heat you up and a menu that’s filled to the brim with winter warmers.

The Devil's Advocate's drink selection is enticing, but the mains are sadly lacking, finds Louisa Finch If there’s one thing Edinburgh’s Old Town does well, it’s atmospheric closes.

Proceedings get off to a good start when the waiter brings a bottle of water to the table unprompted and lets us know what the soup of the day is.

That extends to the craft beers on tap – a priority for Mr Finch – and the impressive list of offerings results in the choice of a Barney’s Volcanic IPA (£5).

Mr Finch opts for the spiced polenta, wilted greens, poached egg and truffle hollandaise (£6).

Things fare no better on the other side of the table where the glazed pork belly, Southeast Asian slaw, coriander and toasted peanuts (£18) is brought to the table as lukewarm as the reception it’s going to get.

Tucked away down Advocate's Close in the historical Old Town of Edinburgh, this restored Victorian pump house is a great escape from it all.

With a long wine list and a great choice of cocktails starting at £7.50, these tipples are sure to tempt.

And for the peckish, there's a great menu to fill those stomachs, from traditional Scottish cullen skink at £11 to tender venison loin for those extra refined palates.

Changing the menu every month to ensure the best quality seasonal produce, get your authentic Scottish experience in this trendy venue and enjoy a cosy, relaxed atmosphere in the heart of Edinburgh's prettiest area.

Difford's Guide rating: 5/5 [Devil's Advocate info & review] Monteiths 57-61 High Street (Royal Mile), Edinburgh, EH1 1S A fairy-lit passageway off the Royal Mile leads to this semi- subterranean bar and restaurant which offers a good beer and wine menu, great cocktails and some very tasty "Grazing" snacks such as Haggis Bon Bons.

Difford's Guide rating: 4/5 [Auld Reekie info & review] The Bon Vivant 55 Thistle Street, Edinburgh, EH2 1DY Bon Vivant is a charming little place with the feel of an old-fashioned tea-shop but a modern European food menu, a good wine list and some of the very best cocktails in Edinburgh.

Difford's Guide rating: 5/5 [Bon Vivant info & review] Bramble Bar & Lounge 16A Queen Street, Edinburgh, EH2 1JE To quote owner Jason Scott, "Named for Dick Bradsell's modern classic cocktail, Bramble is by name as Bramble is by nature: uncomplicated, inventive and downright tasty."

Difford's Guide rating: 4.5/5 [Bryant & Mack info & review] Hoot The Redeemer No. 7 Hanover Street (Princes St), Edinburgh, EH2 2DL This subterranean bar is themed around a 1950s New Orleans' funfair and serves alcoholic ice-cream and frozen cocktails dispensed from slush machines.

Difford's Guide rating: 4/5 [Hoot The Redeemer info & review] Lucky Liquor Co 39A Queen Street, Edinburgh, EH2 3NH A quirky bar that is styled somewhere between soda parlour, ice-cream shop and cocktail bar, Lucky Liquor is aptly named after the fact the bar carries just 13 types of alcohol and offers 13 cocktails on a menu that changes every 13 weeks.

Whisky drinker’s paradise with knowledgable staff who welcome both connoisseurs and newbies A venue from the Bon Vivant stable, this arrived in 2013 and occupies one of the most atmospheric sites in the Old Town, on Advocate’s Close – a stepped, narrow thoroughfare that climbs from Cockburn Street to the High Street.

Like the Bon Vivant mothership, it hardly looks like a cocktail bar at all - mainly because it’s not.

Rather, it’s a modern bistro-bar with a decent food menu, a commendable selection of single malt Scotch whiskies – including the award-winning Ardbeg Uigeadail – but also a way with mixology that's wholly dexterous and certainly worth seeking out.

It may be celebrated for its whisky – and some of the whisky cocktails are truly top class – but drinkers at the Devil’s Advocate shouldn’t miss out on the excellent mixes based on other spirits.

Its House of Advocates for instance involves genever (the forerunner of gin), lavender, blueberry, basil, gentian bitters and lemon; if it was food it would have a Michelin star.

The latest offering from the chaps behind The Bon Vivant is an atmospheric Old Town spot located on Advocate's Close.

It's an attractive space, all bare brick, raw wood and old stone, with a number of cosy booths in which to linger over a dram, and an alluringly well-stocked backbar.

Their food menu is in keeping with that of the Bon Vivant, well-executed pub grub made with local ingredients: Cullen Skink, beer battered hake, and a truly epic beef and pork belly burger served with black pudding, blue cheese and beetroot.

The truffled mac'n'cheese also sounds deliciously decadent, ditto the haggis and black pudding bonbons.
