Viva Mexico sells fantastic, authentic Mexican food at a very affordable price.

Opened by the Gonzalez family in 1984, with the intention of providing a restaurant with genuine Mexican tasting food, Viva Mexico certainly does provide the atmosphere not only with delicious cuisine – enchiladas, burritos and tacos – but with a vibrant Mexican décor that goes beyond the usual papier-mache to incorporate family portraits and vintage photos of mariachis and Zapatistas.

The food is well priced and the portions are generous.

If you aren’t sure about Mexican food, go at lunchtime when the portions are smaller and the prices are cheaper, so you can decide if it is for you.

I’m not much of a dessert man, but whenever I am in Viva Mexico, I find myself going back to it!

food

The oldest Mexican restaurant in the city, offering some truly authentic dishes among more familiar options.

For more than 20 years, Viva Mexico has served Cockburn Street with tasty Mexican food.

Its location could easily have made it a tourist trap, but the restaurant remains loyal to all things Mexican in its décor and its dishes.

A starter of chipotle ribs is so tender the meat drops off the bone into a richly smoked and fruity sauce, with a zesty house salsa to top it off.

The skirt steak chimichanga is wrapped in a crunchy deep-fried tortilla packed with meat and tangy sauce, and the flautas (rolled tortillas) envelope fluffy, shredded chicken in their crispy coating.

Full of tonnes of traditional Mexican charm, brightly decorated and adorned with old Mexicana touches, Viva Mexico on Cockburn Street in the Old Town is the place to go for a true Mexican experience in Edinburgh.

On the menu you will find everything from burritos to chimichanga, all packed full of flavour and made from the finest ingredients.

Tantalise your taste buds with some tasty tacos or tostadas, or opt for one of the chef’s speciality dishes which include camarones – juicy king prawns cooked in your choice of sauce.

Committed to only serving authentic cuisine, Viva Mexico resisted serving fajitas for a long time, but due to popular demand they caved in and now the people of Edinburgh are rejoicing as they are said to be the best in town, served on a sizzling hot platter and available with your choice of beef, chicken, prawns or vegetables!

Of course no Mexican meal would be complete without a margarita to go alongside it, and you will find pitchers of them here at Viva Mexico in Edinburgh’s Old Town, alongside an array of Mexican beers and wines.
