Under the shadow of  Edinburgh’s South Bridge is OX184 a bar restaurant and late night venue;  open until 3am every day and renowned for its wood-fired grill, craft beer and whisky.

House beer on tap is sourced from Tempest Brew Co in Tweedbank, and there’s an eclectic list of craft beer by the can.

There’s also an octet of beers on rotation, with dedicated origin lines for Belgian and US beers, as well as style-dedicated taps for stout, IPA, cider and pale ale.

The open kitchen allows diners to watch their team of chefs sear options including the 8oz shorthorn ribeye steaks on a wood-fired grill, which was custom made by Rosewell based blacksmiths G Fitzsimmons & Son.

The smells of smoking wood and cooking meat will make it hard for anyone who has popped in ‘just’ to drink.

But as a wheelchair or powerchair user, you’ll also know how many of those lists don’t always feature accessible restaurants!

Don’t be put off by the fleet of La Favorita cars delivering pizzas around the city in fast food mode; the restaurant on Leith Walk continues to serve its famous crisp thin log fired pizzas in a large and spacious setting.

All of this information has come from disabled people, their friends and families who have submitted reviews of restaurants in Edinburgh to Euan’s Guide.

This visit included a person who uses: Powerchair The only challenge access wise was parking for us.

Otherwise everything was very easy - big doors to get in, large accessible loo and lots of space to get around.

Tricky to find parking - theres some on side streets but a bit of a challenge.

Only gripe is the loo could do with having a handle on the outside.

OX184 | Bars and pubs in Old Town, Edinburgh

Named for its address and the fact that long ago, this building was at the heart of Edinburgh’s cattle market industry (it is on the Cowgate, after all), OX184 can genuinely boast that it offers something new and fresh on the city’s drinking ‘n’ dining scene.

The food is good quality but not so much of a revelation – taking advantage of the current vogue for all things rootsily American on the bar scene, meals are mostly cooked on the wood-fired grill for a smokily rustic flavour.

The owners FullerThomson are known at their other venues (Holyrood 9A, the Southern and Red Squirrel) for having been in at the start of the gourmet burger craze, but here their dining influences stray off into new areas entirely.

Amidst a long list of craft beers, including some brewed specially for the bar by Tempest, lies a rare secret weapon, and one which makes OX184 a must-visit destination at least once for the adventurous drinker: the pickleback, apparently a staple of teenage drinking escapades in certain parts of America, which is a shot of whiskey washed down with a shot of brine.

With its large floor space over two levels and DJs at the weekend, OX184 is a great hangout from morning until early morning, where you can still get the full menu until 2.30am.
