I thought I wanted a sashimi salad, and a tuna roll…seems that instead, I wanted the sashimi salad and a bowl of noodle soup with a taste of a tuna roll.

The only complaint I have about this dish is that it was very small, whereas the same salad over at Yes Sushi is large enough to be a meal unto itself, for about the same price.

It was good, as freshly made sushi should be made, the rice was still very slightly warm, not packed overly tightly, and the tuna was silky and very fresh.

There was great sushi at the wedding of our Lunch Quest: Istanbul bureau chiefs, for example, but it paled in comparison with the other treats (the memory of soft-shell crab lingers long) served on that particular Maldivian beach.

Hot on the heels of the salad came MJ’s tuna maki, my miso soup, then the wonderfully theatrical bento box, containing three tuna and three salmon maki, cashou pork, salad and rice.

So it is with a small touch of sadness that I recently read that super noodle chain Wagamamas will be opening their first store in Edinburgh on Lothian Road.

Which is when I visited Koyama Restaurant, a newly opened Japanese restaurant which heavily features sushi and noodles on their menu.

Of course the city can sustain the opening of one little Wagamamas alongside other similar and nearby restaurants, however as I ate my meal at Koyama (which was not even a quarter full on Saturday lunchtime) my heart went out to the charming and eager staff whose business could potentially be taken away by the super chain.

I decided to have the the sushi bento box, comprising of 3 salmon and tuna maki rolls, teriyaki chicken, salad, rice and miso soup.

Koyama have an opening deal of 10% off food running through June so pay them a visit if you'd like to support local business and want try some delicious Japanese food.

Koyama (20 Forrest Road, Edinburgh) | The List

food

One of the city’s newest Far Eastern food venues, Koyama ticks most of the required boxes.

The décor is appropriately Japanese – black and white textured walls are scattered with shiny Hokusai prints and red paper lanterns shine above a dozen blue melamine table tops.

While the sushi and sashimi look the part and taste fresh enough, they miss out on texture and build quality.

California sushi rolls are a visually stunning contrast of white rice, vivid orange flying fish roe, yellow omelette and avocado, yet the seaweed is too thick making them difficult to eat.

Lunchtime sees a cheaper streamlined menu including golden katsu curry (£7.50) and quirky bento boxes (from £8.90).

An innovative menu of cheap and hearty Thai street food.

Service is friendly and the atmosphere unpretentious Few things are more pleasing than seeing a great little pop-up get the recognition it deserves, and so it is with Ting Thai Caravan.

Once serving just four great Thai dishes, it now boasts a hearty street food menu of thoughtful innovations and taste combinations.

The menu is separated into rice and noodle boxes, curries, soups and ‘small bowls’, with food available to eat in or take away.

Highlights of the menu (and there are many) include succulent marinated chicken dish Gai Cha Plu and The Nam Tok Nua, a fresh, spicy take on the traditional Thai beef salad.
