Gran Sasso d’Italia overlooking the restaurant The site has had a remarkable transformation and has been turned into a versatile eating/drinking space that feels very welcoming.
Cosy corners The menu has plenty to choose from including some delicious sounding (and looking) pizzas, hearty pasta dishes and also some other interesting mains – it’s a well-balanced menu served from lunchtime onwards.
We both decided to have pasta dishes – with Gran Sasso looking over us what else could we have?
Pappardelle con ragu di cervo Mine was a robust tasting dish with venison slowly cooked down into a ragu that tasted delicious – topped with parmesan cheese this was a classic tasting bit of Italian comfort food.
The dessert menu has a mixture of Italian classics plus some other favourites.

Owned by Rosita Missoni of the famous Italian fashion house, the hotel is ultra-modern and very chic.
However, this is not a case of style over substance as Cucina has won the Scottish Italian Restaurant of the year at the Scottish restaurant awards – twice!
The menu is very tempting, the wine list extensive and the atmosphere chic, but friendly.

Another fabulous trophy could also be heading along the road from Hibs to Newhaven as Sasso joins Miller and Carter in the running for this year’s Hot Plate award.
It’s only the second 30/30 this season, folks, and the fourth in the last two years - fingers crossed diners don’t invade the kitchen in celebration this weekend and batter the chef... There’s a football connection with this vibrant, modern Italian restaurant, which used to be owned by former Scotland keeper and Hibs chairman, Tommy Younger.
Tommy may have provided a safe pair of hands during his career as a goalie, but Sasso is also secure in the grip of new owners Ernesto Crolla and Remo and Gianni Margiotta, who re-opened the place earlier this year after a stylish refurb.
Ronnie and I opted for pasta - mine, from the lunchtime specials, a penne of sausage and sun dried tomatoes, bursting with flavours including freshly grated Parmesan, a touch we appreciated.
Unlike Hibs along the road, our wait might not stretch to 114 years, but we admitted it would still be a long time before we experienced a meal as good again.
