A cool ghoul in lederhosen and scary fräulein in traditional Bavarian dresses took to the streets of Edinburgh to mark the opening of the city’s first authentic German Bier Keller just in time for Halloween.

The new 165 square foot Bier Keller, which will show premier league football and rugby, will be a major addition to Edinburgh’s stag and hen party scene as well as catering for birthday celebrations and corporate functions.

This festive season the spirit of German Christmas markets will be brought to life as Frankeinstein’s new Bier Keller will serve up winter treats including roast turkey saddle with cranberry gravy, belly pork with red wine and honey reduction as well as dark chocolate and honeycomb mousse and mince pies.

Frankenstein Bar manager John McCausland said: “Our new Bier Keller will be the ultimate party destination for stag and hen parties as well as big group events.

Also, this festive season, for those looking for party nights out with a difference, the new Bier Keller will be pulling out all the stops to throw the best Christmas and Hogmanay events in the capital.”

The food on the other hand was a totally different experience, in fact it was shocking; we ordered 2 burgers, a hot dog and a steak, all of those arrived cold, literally cold!

The food came back in the next 5-7 min slightly warmer, my steak was no longer medium-rare, and the bread on the burgers was dry, one burger was totally burnt and impossible to eat.

Few minutes later we were approached by the manager, who tried to assure me that the food was definitely not microwaved as this was against the health and safety, well my response to that was that rules do not stop people from breaking them and that the food was absolutely microwaved.

Frankly I only went with this due to the fact that both the waitress and the manager were very polite and caring, however normally I would not even dreamt of being charged for the food that had to be sent back and returned the same unacceptable quality.

I will not go back to Frankenstein’s for food, and not even certain I will for drinks, shame as it’s a great place but the chef definitely let them down.

Mary Shelley may have conjured up the idea of the world's most enduring monster during a dreary Summer in Switzerland a little under two centuries ago, but the brooding gothic tale has a certain resonance in Edinburgh with its history of bodysnatchers, gharish ghost stories, and dramatic architecture.

The Frankenstein pub, in a suitably gothic setting of an old church, may be more Rocky Horror than literally literary, catering to hen and stag nights, studes, and such like with its karaoke Sundays, Rocky Horror themed nights, and Silent Movie Tuesdays.

A different kind of Frankenstein monster.

Open early til late throughout the Fringe, with free, fun, comedy and horror themed shows for all ages.

I have been here a couple of times for food and once for a night out.

The food is cheap and if you have a student card then you get 2 for 1 on lots of meals.

The meals taste good and they have a huge selection, from mac cheese to something a bit more fancy.

For a night good there is a good atmosphere, it is themed on Frankenstein and is decorated like that inside.

The drinks are reasonable priced and the cocktails are good although there isn't a very big selection of cocktails to choose from.
